Conversation with my Rolex AD

As someone who has scratched that itch (owned and sold a couple Rolex watches) I don't think you had a good conversation. I think we're a bunch of rats in the maze being manipulated into thinking we need more cheese. But yeah, I wouldn't mind another Explorer some day.

So riddle me this. If there's suddenly a stock of SS sports watches available to fill the display cases of ADs around the world on a "display only, not for sale" basis, I'm assuming they're coming from Rolex because the dealers are going to turn over their saleable stock immediately.

Hmmmm, it almost seems as though Rolex has a large stock of these watches sitting around or something. Puzzling.

Nothing in my AD's window when I was there the other day, maybe it is just a few select stores that have these mystical watches 😗

I think your dealer is full of crap, or things are very different in the UK than they are in the USA. I ordered a GMTII BLRO, supposedly one of the hardest to get, and got a call that it was in about 5 weeks later. I am on good terms with my dealer and have purchased from them previously, so I am sure this helped.

Duh, yeah it helped. That’s the only way to get these is to be a regular buyer at your AD. But someone celebrating a milestone with their first nice watch, who can only afford the one they want, isn’t in the same shoes.

All, what is a reasonably priced Rolex for ladies, might gift one to wife.

The proper answer is: whichever one she likes!

34mm’s don’t hold their value like the others. It seems like you can find 34mm red and white grapes on the second hand market for around $3600. Obviously older models for even less

That is the only answer the wife will find acceptable!

My local AD actually had an Air King in the case today. Hadn't tried on one before. Kinda dig it. Still too rich for my blood. Back to browsing used Omegas and Tudors.

I was at an event in Cork last week which was to showcase the Basel collection from Rolex & Tudor. They had pretty much the whole range available - some were jeweller stock and most was Rolex stock. Subs, SeaDwellers etc, Daytonas etc. They had the meteorite white gold GMT which was stunning. I haven't bought from this jeweller yet so as much as I have a good relationship with them, I can't see them pushing me up any waiting lists until I do. A friend of mine just dropped 13k Euros on a bi-metal Sub though and they will definitely help him out soon.

Nothing of interest in my area this week and all I was hoping for was a DJ41, I had to settle for this pre-owned DJ2 and will it will be sold if and when a DJ41 becomes available.

I walked into my AD about 3 months ago. Just looking around and mentioned that I wouldn’t mind getting a sub. The sales guy went in the back and pulled one out. He said it was “already sold” but could “maybe” sell it to me if I was seriously considering buying that day. I wasn’t but I think I could have walked out with that watch that day.

Honestly I wasn’t impressed with the watch. It was too small for me.

An auction house on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia has had a surprising number of Rolexes for sale recently - here’s the current batch with a GMT, various coloured Submariners, a fancy Daytona and a Yachtmaster https://www.lloydsonline.com.au/AuctionLots.aspx?cid=42&smode=0

Normally the nicest watches these guys sell are TAG Heuers, so I wonder if these are from an AD who either lost their account or closed up as no one was buying?!?

(PS I cannot vouch for the authenticity or provenance of these pieces 😗)

Rolex does what Rolex wants!
Rolex was put into a Swiss trust when Hans passed away.
No one knows who the beneficiaries are, there are no earnings numbers released.
No production #s given.
Rolex controls their own market and their dealers have no say they just have to take what they get and play by the rules or lose the license to sell.

Rolex can, and often does, cancel long term relationships with dealers even if the dealer sells a lot of product at the retail price. There is no rhyme or reason with Rolex. They do what they want. It really is a strange organization that has worked itself into one of the world's most recognized and desired brands. You can't argue with their success.

From an AD, I’d like to call it “my” AD now.

Is that a 16800?

The biggest Rolex AD in Nassau Bahamas had nothing but jewel encrusted datejusts, and a gold Yachtmaster and gold MOP Daytona. They blamed it on selling Rolex to customers who put them on the grey market, except that they then admitted that they've NOT RECEIVED ANY SS Professional Rolex in WEEKS, and so it's a shortage and not just their customers re-selling them at a markup.

What puzzles me about Rolex is why anyone would willingly wait for months - and sometimes years - to overpay for a mid-tier mass produced Swiss luxury watch. Let’s face it: There are plenty of available brands that equal Rolex in quality (Omega being one of them) and other brands that are, quite frankly, better. The difference is that most of those brands are readily available. The notion that Rolex has a waiting list because it can’t produce enough watches to keep up with demand is simply ridiculous. That being said, I give Rolex a lot of credit for their marketing which has made the brand one of the most recognized names worldwide.

The power of branding, advertising, ambassadors, pricing and availability over many years has been masterful. Rolex is one of the best known luxury brands in the world, it's an aspirational brand, that all works in their favor. The products are iconic in looks, they work, they last. Are they top of the line, no, but they are good enough. An Android phone is good enough for almost all people's needs but millions will pay the premium to get in the Apple sphere. Much of these products are emotional, and emotions are hard to change.
