Conversation with a Scammer

Hi all. I've been receiving scam PMs since I made my first WTB post. Have reported the user, deleted the conversation and moved on. This time I thought of giving it a try just out of curiosity. Just to see how the person will respond, evade any questions, and finally maybe I could understand who's behind the screen.

The PM was as follows by this user. I've only redacted the email.

hello are you still interested in getting this?.
you can contact kevin he has some Omega 1503 Bracelet Link for sale........... PM him @ [**email redacted**]

Right off the bat you can tell they're either a young person, have not so great English, or a combination of both. I'm sure they're registering users frequently with random emails and sending that template of a message to everyone they can.

My conversation with them via email continues as follows. I've removed greetings and closings, just to keep it tidy. The body of the emails hasn't been edited in any way.

Me: Hey Kevin. Someone gave me your email in Omega Forums. I'm interested in buying one or two links, depending on availability, for an Omega 1503 bracelet. Do you still have any? If so please send me a couple photos and the price you're asking.

Kevin: Yes I have some available for sale. Where are you located?

Me: I'm located in Tirana, Albania.

Kevin: Will you be open to shipping? I’m located at US

Me: Yeah, as long as the price is right, no problem for me.

Kevin: Considering the distance I want to be fair with the price, let me know how much you are willing to offer shipped to you. As I don’t want to sway you away with my price.

Me: Well, these are selling for $70 new on eBay with $20+ for shipping. For a used one I'd have no problem paying $50-60 shipping included. Is that far from your price range? Also, do you have two links or just one?

Kevin: I have 2. How is 120 shipped to you for the 2

Me: That works. Do you have any photo of the links just to check the condition. They also include pins and tubes, right? Also, does Paypal work for you?

Kevin: Yes they do. They are in a mint condition. I can send some pictures when I get home. Can I use my son PayPal? He can accept payment as friends and family so as to fasten the shipment, shipping will be made today and I will send you the tracking number. Let me know if that works for you.

Me: I'm not here to judge or be a moral compass, but what you're doing is shitty. I also imagine you're from a poor country and this is your way to help your family or save some money for yourself. If you'll even bother answering, where are you from and how old are you. I have no ill intention, just plain curiosity.

Kevin: I’m sorry. Your intervention will really be of help

Me: You still didn't tell me where you're from and how old you are. If I can find a way to help, I sure will.

Kevin: 21 Yemen. I want to go to School

Their plan is typical. Fish for someone interested in something; give them a price they think it's fair, but it's also not that low as to minimize their "earnings"; pretend to be from the US to make it convincing, even though their English is not great; and of course request payment via Paypal F&F so there's no turning back. Are they really a 21 years old from Yemen that goes to School? I don't think there's any point in following it up, as someone who lies you once, is probably gonna keep on lying. Can't say I don't feel some empathy for what they have to do to get a few bucks, though.

This was just an experiment out of curiosity that I though I'd share for the curiosity of others. There's nothing to learn here. Bottom line, be cautions and only trust people that have a proven history of trust.

Not all scammers are doing what they do because they have no other means of making a living. Some, and I would say most, are simply criminals and I have no patience for them especially those who prey on the elderly, the disabled and the desperate segments of the population. I wish there were more threads like this one: https://omegaforums.net/threads/must-read-scammer-got-played.109568/

My tolerance level of those who take advantage of children, the elderly, the disabled, and those who have no means of defending themselves is absolutely zero…

Funny I had a similar experience with a scammer he gave me too much info to see through. I threatened to call the authorities which would have been useless as he was in another country but he begged me not to and told me how tough life is in their country. I’m not heartless but scamming is no way to try to improve your life. I work with some desperate people and often have to intervene when they get caught up in a scam. Desperation will drive people to do crazy things.

Perhaps it’s sad on both sides but yeah as said above most scammers are just scum committing crime for money

I also come from a modest upbringing. My country in the 90s, fresh out of communism, was among the poorest in the world. My family managed to go through that without scamming anyone. I know that everyone's background and context is different, but if we managed, others also can. I'm an emphatic person, but it's really hard to tolerate scam for any reason.

Every time I put up a WTB post I get a very dubious PM from a member with no history on OF who provides an email address of someone with the item I’m looking to purchase - most recent message was last night.

The word “scammers” downplays their actions. As has been said “scammers” prey on the most vulnerable in our society and in many cases they ruin people’s lives.

Well then…I may just throw out a WTB post and see if the person will take a bite at my apple. Sounds fun, but I will mercilessly out the him/her after having my fun.

From experience, I think there’s a very high probability that a scammer will take the bait!! Even if you’re only looking to buy an obscure watch booklet they’ll say that they know someone with one to sell!!

This could be fun. I wonder what would happen if you posted a WTB for something that doesn't even exist? I need a replacement Johnson Rod for my Speedmaster. 😀

You can do a Bitly link that will add a tracker so you can find out where they are from. I have no doubt he's from the country he says he's from as Africa is rife with scammers like this. It's not just India, though it's more ingrained in their culture at this point, where it reaches the highest levels of government that allows it to continue under their noses.

Am I gonna get banned for posting a fictitious WTB post?

For example:

WTB Baculum jewels and balance cock for 1937 Omega Marine, ref ck679, Cal 19.4.

Check with dsio first, but I hope not. It would be great to see what happens.

Be cautious in baiting. It may harm you more than them. Thieves and liars have always lived side by side by honest people. When you bait someone, you open your mind to their world.

Point taken. But then again, I sometimes ask questions of someone about which I already know the answer. The answer given often separates the wheat from the tares, the sheep from the goats….

Surprisingly these scams have been arround for centuries.

Charles Dickens was conned after his first success so wondered what sort of people would do such things. This created the Jellyby family which sent out letters written by the children solicitating funds to sponsor Tea Plantations in Africa. Yes Nigerian phishing scams.

In the last complete novel, "Our mutual friend." there is a chapter titled "The dismal swamp." This chapter details such letters. Mostly solicitating for testimonials, Often written in a fine feminine fist.

... And I wasted the morning, when I could be outside, or riveting landeron balance staffs, watching glitter bomb videos in the other thread. Of course now I know the issue with my hairsprings. The Johnson rod is missing.

Sadly in the future, such gits will be romanticized the way pirates and Highway men of the 18th century now are.

Fagin really is a likeable old gentleman ...

There have been wealthy Nigerian princes for centuries, their methods to rip off their marks change with the technology. There is no point engaging with these pests.
