The latter. I wrote about the scalloped/toothed/knurled crown in an old thread and while there are no certainties, I am pretty sure that only the thin version of the scalloped crown is correct. @BenBagbag made a great post in that thread showing what he had researched.

Here's a photo of three 14XXX Constellations I used to own:

The slim gold crown is the one I consider to be correct, as is the decagonal one. As decagonal crowns were replaced with Seamaster clover crowns during services, I would propose that the thin scalloped crowns were replaced with the thicker variety.
Thanks for the reminder! I vaguely remembered this but not who, when or exactly what. I thought, surely he can't be saying toothed crowns are wrong for 14381s! but I wanted to be sure....

To the best of my knowledge they are only correct on non-dog leg 14xxx versions and they are a fair bit more user-friendly than the decagonal ones. The thicker version are better for winding still and personally I don't think that they detract a whole lot from the look. I wouldn't search out a replacement if I had one on a Constellation myself.

Your old gold capped Constellation says hello... I am so glad you decided to sell it, because I love it.

from a recent thread

appears thin to me, and from the factory.

My 14381 also has this thin type of crown. I don't think it has been replaced.

My 14900-62 SC came with this crown; I'm uncertain if it is correct. I bought the thin decagonal crown to replace it.

I did a search for the 14900 at Cousins; they list the knurled crown.

Now that might just be the replacement, but it doesn't look like yours either.
