I have read a lot of praise for these stand alone grinders like the silenzio. Curious to everyone's opinions on the differences/advantages between something like the silenzio and the integrated grinders included in something like the breville I own.
The grinder in the Breville is very good but it’s not as consistent a grind as with the Silenzio. I have it dialled in perfectly to get 17 grams each time.

@TheGreekPhysique Yeah, tamping pressure makes a big difference. If you compact the puck too much it will choke the machine. You can buy tampers with a pressure gauge, but I've no experience with them.

I find that a single, firm press down for a few seconds with a some of your bodyweight behind it is all that is needed. You don't have to go pressing with all your might loads of times...

Went to the grocery store yesterday and they didn’t have my go to milk in stock so had to pick up the giant generic whole milk.

Went to steam it this morning and it was awful. Terrible taste. Wouldn’t really froth properly.

Was wondering what is everyone’s go to milk?

Costa Rican is great, but Hawaiian Kona Peaberry is a high octane delight. Many years ago, I had the privilege of sipping a hot cup of Kona Peaberry while I was sitting on Hanalei Bay beach on Kauai watching my then 12 year old daughter take surfing lessons. That was a pretty good day.

disregarding your "money no object" part, a colleague just did this last summer. he's on the Big Island in his reitrement home -- still working with us but he's where he wants to be once he calls it quits...

My sister lives in Durango and she brought me a couple bags from Durango Coffee Company. Their house blend was pretty darn good. Their Western blend, it's not my favorite but it's drinkable.

They tend dark and actually mix different roasts, which is intriguing.

For reference, I use a vintage West Bend (yay Wisconsin!) Flavo-Matic anodized in red percolator, coarse ground, 1/2 cup of beans for 48 oz of water, or "8 cups" as they were measured then, in other words 8 of 6 oz coffee cup.

Other favorites include Stewart's Private Blend (Chicago) and Café Bustelo, which is allegedly espresso but coarse-ground and perked is delightful!

Minor panic in the household when we recently had a Nespresso machine failure. The machine was puking liquid all over the place when my wife tried to use it. Not having a working machine is not an option (my wife needs her cappuccinos!) so we quickly ordered a new machine.

But I wanted to see if I could fix the old one, as I hate throwing away that much plastic if it's something simple...first thing was seeing how it comes apart - uses the those damned anti-tampering torx screws, but thankfully a small slot screwdriver works so only 2 screws to get the cover off:





Water is supposed to come out of a spout and then go down the lower channel to your cup:



But tabs are broken off the spout that feeds the liquid this far, so it wasn't putting the liquid in the right place:



New part found on-line for I think $15 or so...note that the tabs are reinforced on the new design, to prevent this exact issue - continuous improvement in action:

All done:



Wife is now happy, as she likes this machine more than the new one (which is now back in the box as a spare).
