Chrono24: What is wrong with this Speedy?

Hi, I've been looking at this model for the longest time and can't seem to figure out what is wrong with it. It hasn't sold for ages and I'm wondering if it's just due to the higher price or if there are any issues. Pushers, crown and dial all look correct, the dial has developed a nice light patina - the only thing is that it has possibly been relumed at some point. This is a reference 145.022-71 and the seller has also sent me the pics of the dial in better quality.

Appreciate any help from the knowledgeable people here. My search for a decent vintage Speedmaster has been taking forever and I'm getting increasingly frustrated.

Japanese sellers can be difficult to deal with regarding price reductions. You would need them to declare differently, if you want to avoid the full 20% gst for imports. Or have it sent to a trusted member/friend in a non gst country , who forwards that to you with your description. The other question is about the band. Ask them for a good picture inside the clasp and the number on the endlinks, which should fit a lot better.... and a mvmt. Pics is needed as well. Service? Kind regards. Achim

Thanks for flagging. I live in Hong Kong, so there is no GST or import taxes here. My understanding is that these guys sell net of GST, but will double-check with them.

Overpriced given the mediocre case and dial.

Am still learing, so was wondering what makes the case and dial mediocre in your view? To me, it looks fairly decent, but I've probably not had enough Speedmasters in my hand yet to see the difference. On pricing, I feel that USD 5k+ has become sort of the new normal for decent vintage Speedy's with step dial. The ones that are still available in this sell for USD 8k+. I appreciate some of the models are quite rare, but still paying 5.5k for a step dial doesn't strike me as completely crazy. Been trying to find a decent one for so long, but there don't seem to be any available at the moment.

Just go for it. A few of the dial "imperfections" seem to come from distorted plexi scratches....good luck ! Achim

well, the bracelet endlinks are fubar'ed and will need to be replaced with the right ones for this reference, and there is something about that bezel that is bothering me, does the font seem a little "heavy" like it was retouched or something? Case is pretty heavily polished, which in my book is the biggest issue here; not unattractive though.

A style idea to complement the mirror-polish 😉

$5500 is too high for the case condition and other minor irregularities

How about the bezel:

I don't like the font, seems way to fat compared to genuine ones!

What do you think???

Agree with @repoman "Case is pretty heavily polished, which in my book is the biggest issue here"

EDIT: Just realized that @repoman already mentioned the bezel, sorry!

Everyone has their own level of patience and the priorities with respect to condition. If you are happy with this watch for $5.5k USD, then that's fine. I would just say to ignore the first two photos and look carefully at the third one.

This sounds really epic, may I ask you for how long you have been looking?

Have been looking more seriously for a year now - I know other people say they needed 10 years to find the perfect Speedy, but I don't really want to wait that long ;-)

I've also been monitoring that for a while (2 months or so), but it seems like the supply of decent Speedmasters from the 70s has completely dried up. I am also monitoring IG and other forums, but nothing so far, except one model (see below)

Found this 145.022-69 in another forum and it comes with the flat link bracelet, which I personally find most attractive. Here again, I wonder what the catch is as for a pre-moon 145.022 you'd expect to pay more than USD 5.5k? Given then choice between the two (the one above and the one below), I'd go for the '69.

I don't think so!

Are more pictures available?
