Change the language on Patek 3970?

Patek Philippe's guidelines have changed over the years so you need to clarify it with the relevant service center in your country (not your AD). They are stricter now about customizing or changing dials/hands for regular customers, if you are a very good customer they will do lots of custom stuff, but those kinds of customers aren't hanging out on these types of forums. I believe the 3970 goes back to Geneve for service as standard practice. Most collectors would not change the day/month wheels because it changes the way it came from the factory, and how it is shown on the internal books of the company. We all know how people freak out here when something is not original from the factory, the same will be true for the PP in the future. If it doesn't bother you that's fine. So just check with the service center and be prepared to open your wallet for a complete service and changing of the wheels.....and a long wait.

In US, Stern does the 3970/5970 etc. Vintage goes back to Geneve.

Any idea how much service in Geneva and having them change out the date wheels will cost? Just curious about the ballpark figure.

Service cost on 3970/5970 runs around $2500. Might be up a little since then. Runs 10-15 weeks depending on how busy there are (and they're always busy!)

So I’m considering buying a 3970. I was wondering if it’s possible to have Patek change the language wheel to English?

I was told that if I take the watch in for service I can request the language wheels be changed?

Never owned a Patek before so this is all new territory for me.

I wouldn't change the wheels. From a originality standpoint it's not good and the other languages ones are part of the charm. Just like with Universal tri's.

I think the really big boys: repeaters, tourbillons, maybe celstials probably go back also but i'm not sure

Just an update. The watch is a rose gold 3970 at yellow gold prices. So even paying for the service I come out ahead.

I’m on a payment plan for the watch. I should have it by January.

Thank you all for advice and comments. I will make sure to post a pic when I get it.

Personally, if you plan on holding onto it I would have the date wheels changed. It will have no effect on its value. It will have to go to Geneva and Patek will insist on servicing it at the same time. I would expect a 3k bill and a 6-12 months time frame.
It's a fantastic watch and hope you do decide to get one.

I agree with John - it does not affect the value to have the language wheels changed. This does not make it a "Serviced" or "refinished" dial in any way whatsoever. Nothing is even touched on the surface of the dial. Patek will not return the wheels replaced, however. You can get this done in NYC without it being sent to Geneva in my experience.

Years ago when I was considering a dial change on a Patek 5040 perpetual, to change the language was $1700. Also, they do not return the original dial - once changed, the watch is returned with the new dial affixed only.
I also thought about having the dial changed on my 3970J a year or so ago. I was quoted $1800 for the dial, the service was an additional $2000. The deal breaker was the 18 month wait time as all the grand complications go back to Switzerland for service. I assume the date wheel is cheaper than a dial but they will still want to service the watch and that will take a while.
