Casing loose movements

Hi all,

I’m a new member and an Omega noob, posting because I’d really appreciate some advice on finding watch cases for a couple of Omega 625 movements. I inherited a box of loose movements from my Grandad who worked for over 15 years at David Shackman & Sons in Chesham, Bucks, of which many of you may well know. My understanding was that the movements were imported loose for the avoidance of a higher tax on consumer goods that the watches would be subject to if they were fully assembled, and that DS&S were casemakers for Omega, Rolex and Jaeger Le Coultre.

There’s two movements which are particularly nice, one ladies and the other I believe is unisex, but I’m hoping to find a gents style case to fit so that I can wear it and give the other to my sister for us to wear as heirlooms, even if they are frankens.

(I stitched a few photos together because I couldn’t zoom further out on the microscope!)

The first is, I believe, a 12 lignes dial, manual wind 625 movement from 1974 from a Deville watch. It differs from the others I have because it has a sort of case surround around the movement, which I imagine strongly dictates the type of case it will fit. This surround also has a circular notch at 8 o’clock. I’m assuming maybe this just adapts the small movement to a larger case.

The second has the same movement from the same year but without the case surround. I’m not 100% sure on the size but it seems to be 9 ⅜ lignes, I think this one’s pretty stunning!

You might notice that both have ‘½’ etched by hand on the movement; my Grandad was Arthur, ‘Arth’ for short and signed everything as “½” 😀.

So my questions are the same for both movements really, can you advise:
  • Is there a specific type of case these would fit? Snapback, uni shell etc.?
  • Can you help identify a compatible case model number for each so that I could get them into watches? I found watches in 111.077 that looked to be the same dial as the larger movement but the back of the movement didn’t seem compatible.
  • Any recommendations for where to buy cases if so? I was advised Dennison might be a good start
  • Is there a set dial size to correspond to a set case size or is there a bit of freedom of what fits?
  • What are your thoughts on servicing given that they’ll be frankens?
  • General help identifying the models
I appreciate there's a few questions there, but I'd be grateful for any advice at all!

All the best

James

Finding a case to fit your dials may be a bit of work, but if you can find a seller who has collected a large inventory of cases or parts watches, you can send him your measurements and maybe he will have something that works for you. You may need to have movement holders fabricated.
