Cases sizes, thickness, and contours. Who wants a slimmer Omega?

Omega has clearly recognized the problem, what with all the buzz that case thickness gets here on these forums. And you do see some remedial steps being taken. .

This sounds promising. Hope you're right as I be other makers will follow when they see the results. The slab is dead, long live the elegance.

I feel like my eyes plays tricks on me sometimes. I distinctly remember trying on the 2998CK edition and thinking "man, this is waaaay too thick". However, it's supposedly the exact same thickness as the FOIS, which I have no problems with thickness.

My guess is that the bracelets/straps that come with each are just vastly difference. Try seeing if you can get these watches on your wrist with some thinner after market straps and I think you'll be surprised at how much it changes the feel of the watch.

I’m also holding out hope for an MC SMP next year, then I’ll be ok with my thick 8900 PO and 8600 Aqua Terra.

Your solution is the PO 2201.50. That's what I have with the 2500D caliber and I would never consider any of the newer models for all the reasons you mentioned.

I have a Speedmaster Professional and my biggest gripe is how thick the back of the case is. Makes my watch sit higher than it needs to be. From a side view, it makes it look like a UFO.
I feel the exact same way. My co-axial Speedmaster has the display back case and it’s positively bulbous. I would love an all metal back that would shave a millimeter or two off the thickness. I never wanted a display back anyway. I looked at the movement for about 5 seconds when I got the watch, said “huh”, and that was it. I’m looking for a replacement back but I don’t want one that says Racing or anything else like that.

I swap back and forth between my Speedmaster and a Rolex GMT2, and the Rolex is so slim in comparison it’s striking.

I agree that there are many modern Omegas that wear much much too thick, however I feel that the 300MC is not one of those models. Sure, its about 15mm thick, but on the wrist it sits down very well in my opinion. Sure, its not as comfy is a Speedy but it is by no means uncomfortable.

There have been two developments in 2017 that show (IMO) that Omega might be attempting to address consumer concern around case thickness.

New Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer
Around 1mm thinner than the previous modern 9300/9900 designs but also using visual design tricks to elongate the case and give the watch a slimmer profile.

8806 single barrel calibre for the Railmaster 57 60th LE and non-LE
The new 8806 calibre sacrifices just 5 hours of power reserve (55->60h) and loses the jumping hour hand, useful or syncing to new time-zones during international travel. With this new calibre Omega have managed to keep the case thickness on the Railmaster 60th LE down to 12.7mm (AT 41mm is 13.5mm, Globemaster 13mm). Not a massive reduction and still thicker than alternatives from Rolex, JLC and others at this price point, but nevertheless still shows a slight "slimming" trend.

Also worth noting that Omega remedied the long endlink issues (they now point downwards instead of out at an angle, like on the SM300) on all the new Aqua Terra and Planet Ocean watches so that they fit a wider range of wrist sizes. Granted, another visual trick of sorts, but a proof point that they’re paying attention.

And let's not forget that the domed sapphire of the RMLE adds around 2mm to the overall height of 12.7mm. It's essentially 10.7mm. I think the 8806 will play a significant role in Omega's future releases, including re-issues of the Constellation Pie Pan (which I'm particularly very excited about).

Would I love a planet ocean that was at least 2mm thinner? Absolutely but it hasn’t stopped me from enjoying mine.

I installed the new adjustable clasp last weekend and I now love it even more.
Looks at 2500's 😉

I know, I know. I’ve been told many times. I’m pretty sure you have even mentioned this to me before 🤦. I just love the matte grey ceramic bezel, hour markers and the hour/minute hands of the 8500 so much that I’m willing to sacrifice the 2mm I dream of. Maybe one day you will finally convince me 😁

Proof that everyone has their own taste right there. Other than the thickness of the 8500 it is precisely the grey bezel and the minute / hour hands of the 8500 that I don't like compared to the deep black and pointy sharp minute / hour hands of the 2500. I find that the 2500 has all the charm.

My pre-bond is so slim, I have big dumb wrists a shade over 8 inches and I love the way it sits.

When you’re a looking for something smaller and thinner then it’s the Globemaster. With its 39mm diameter and its slim profile it’s a very versatile watch. Sporty with the bracelet, dressy with a strap. I have the OEM blue strap ordered in addition to the bracelet. The brown B&S isn’t the best fit but it’s the only picture I have which shows my GM from the side.

That is a stunning shot. How do you find the bracelet on it? Without a doubt, it is a killer on the leather...

I've got the same strap, so that's a start, but adding the Globemaster bit to it would have upped the cost quite considerably.. 😀

Quite like the bracelet also and it wears extremely comfortable.

It's very unique...a very different case design than the AT.
