Can you think of a movie that would be a crime if you did not see it ?

For an Aussie flavour:
Beneath Hill 60
The Water Diviner
The Dressmaker.

All relatively recent movies, you don't need to be an Aussie to enjoy.
I avoided The Dressmaker for a while, it looked too much of a chick flick. I was wrong.

I explained to a customer a few weeks ago (after sending him an e-mail meant for another branch of his company) "I picked a bad day to quit sniffing glue". The guy looked at me like I was crazy.

So I doubled down and said "Joey. Do you like movies about gladiators"?

I was chatting with friends last weekend, a Airplane reference was inserted into the conversation. Everyone got it.

Some already mentioned but worth saying again:

The Godfather I & II

The Usual Suspects

Band of Brothers (10 part mini-series about Easy Company, 506 Regiment in 101st Airborne Division during WWII - I find it riveting and have watched the full series many times)

Forrest Gump

Glengarry Glen Ross

Dead Poets Society

Goodwill Hunting

Office Space (my wife and I quote that all the time... "got a meeting with the Bob's, they called me at home..", "yeah, I'm gonna need you... to go ahead... and come in tomorrow..", "... it's not a half day or anything...")

I am admittedly a big horror and sci fi movie fan. Completely agree on Alien and Aliens...the rest can and should be forgotten. Terminator, also mentioned, is a must.

I cannot be the only "Get to the choppah!" fan am I?

One more of my favorites: "You're so cool Brewster!"

It's a Wonderful Life
Field of Dreams
Gone With the Wind
The Natural
Rudy
Rocky
Sound of Music
It Happened One Night
Dances with Wolves
Avalon (one of Barry Levinson's semi-autobiographical movies, visually stunning)
The Last Emperor

Comedy:
Trading Places
Young Frankenstein
A Christmas Story

Also a big weakness for any Marvel movie, the opening of Patton and the Little Roundtop scene from Gettysburg

Previously mentioned:
The Shawshank Redemption, Godfather I & II, Forrest Gump, Blazing Saddles, Airplane, Back to the Future, Goodfellas and The Sting

And I thought watching all the movies @aap posts on Instagram was going to take a long time.

When I get my new (dream)home theater set up I am going to watch/rewatch so many of these. Might have to take an OF hiatus.

My additions to the thread... maybe not must sees but all entertaining:
-The Thomas Crown Affair (one of my favorites)
-Speed
-Star Wars
-The Rock
-Inception
-Marvel movies (my weakness as well @GeorgeBailey2)
-I Love You, Man
-The Matrix
-Back to the Future
-Interstellar
-The Wolf of Wallstreet
-Titanic

I could keep going...

Somehow forgot this one too, which I loved as a kid and even more after re-watching it as an adult. It's an almost perfect movie IMO...

That's a huge statement. I'm with you about alien(s) but I don't get why Robocop's so good? Maybe i need to revisit it.

The last film i watched that made me regret not buying a huge TV before viewing it was 'battleship'. I don't want to rewatch it now because my memory of how much i liked it would be compromised.
Other, equally vacuous, movies that i loved at the time include 'bluejuice' (it's about turning 30 and i was turning 30 at the time) and potc (because ghost pirates... Arghhh)

Glad to know I inspired you to watch / rewatch some movies! Which of them did you see and like?

'bluejuice'

😁
Bang a gong (Get it on) - Catherine Zeta Jones at her absolute best

in a similar vein
Liv Tyler in "One Night at McCool's"

Other, equally vacuous, movies that i loved at the time include ...

Point Break - Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze/Lori Petty "Punk, Quarterback Punk" "That would be a waste of time" "He ain't coming back"
The Wraith - young Charlie Sheen

Couple of others off the top of my head:
An American Werewolf in London
The Fifth Element (hence my avatar)

"Up" has already been mentioned. If anyone hasn't had kids or grandkids in the last 10 or 15 years and has avoided "children's movies" then I can't recommend some of the Disney/Pixar movies enough.
"Up" has a truly amazing opening.
"The Incredibles" has all the best bits of SuperHero movies/007/Villains island hideouts etc and great humour.

Casablanca - but don't visit the actual city it's not like the film
Blade runner - a must see for all futurist architects
Get Carter - my home town seen at its 'gritty' worst (it's not like that now - promise)
