Can a Speedmaster be a proper dress watch?

According omega and pitti uomo : yes

Times change. So maybe these days in the right strap it can be.

Many years only the accused in the dock would have tattoos. Nowadays the lawyer and the judge and even the judge are just as likely to have them. (Not judging tattoos or people to have them, using it as an example of how what is acceptable in a given social context can change over time).

It’s a dress watch for astronauts only.

One thing I still enjoy is age old style.
Was only looking at a few Dean Martin pictures the other day. Those days are gone 👎

This is an example of what only serves to muddy the waters.

There's a significant difference between what is considered to be dressed appropriately for certain formal occasions and what is merely a dapper dress style for a Dandy man according to the prolitariat.

Try as you might, tool watches are not formal watches. Really now, just have both in your inventory for the right occasion.

Indeed, simples!
Personal preferences and taste can always override anything of course, but that is a good guideline.

Those gents on this picture are the finest exemple of sprezattura....
This question is pointless because it depends on the eye of the viewer not the wearer

I have worn my Speedy with a suit and think it’s perfectly acceptable. People dress up submariners all the time which I think is even more of a stretch.

It's on the same level really.
Sadly at some point, somebody's got to be kidding themselves on this matter regardless of how much one rubs at the line to blur the definition.
Besides, If it wasn't for some totally ficticious character in a popular spy novel we probably wouldn't be having this conversation on this level.

I know what Pitti is and also what sprezattura means. IMO, this is not it. You cannot claim to dress with a sense of sprezattura without looking at the setting and social context of the situation and dressing sprezattura is all about challenging conventions, setting yourself apart knowingly and having flair for details. Dressing like the men on the photo at Pitti is conforming to the conventions of that particular setting, completely overdoing the "details" in an attempt on setting themselves apart - with the ironic result that they all end up looking similar.

Conforming to conventions and peacocking - far, far from sprezattura.

A Speedmaster on a primitive, brown leather strap - far, far from a dress watch.
