I posted pictures of two pocket watches on Wednesday of this week. The Hamilton private label grade 940, has just been added to the collection of a good friend of mine.

The dial name is L H DOLL, CALGARY NWT. Calgary was part of the Canadian North West Territories until it became a province in 1905. The private label Hamilton has the dial name giving Calgary's location as North West Territories. So it pre-dates 1905. We have decided to do a feature display of this watch at a train show to happen here, in two weeks.

The watch:
From the archives of the Glenbow Museum here, regarding L H DOLL.

Re: the previous post about the Hamilton grade 940 pocket watch my friend has added to his collection. Well, I serviced it today, and I must say that, for a 122 year old watch, it is very nice. I had to solve some problems left during a previous haphazard repair, but all is now good. It will be an an interesting addition to,our exhibit at an upcoming train show. T.he private label dial indicates CALGARY NWT. The NWT stands for North West Territories (Canada). Our province became Alberta in 1905. Alberta Louise was a daughter of England’s. Queen Victoria, so that is where Alberta got its name. Dam, they are a beautiful movement in my opinion.

Illinois Bunn Special Type III 60 hr from 1927

Bunn Special signed case by Wadsworth

I recently replaced broken crystal with convex beveled glass crystal from Whites Crystal Mfg in San Francisco

Edit: You can see where i put a tad too much glue between 9 and 6 when setting crystal (but my eyes can't see it without a loupe).
Just a tiny dab next time!

Another edit: On dial picture I also noted a rather long hair wrapping around the seconds hand- successfully extracted. Another benefit of posting macro photos here!

Gold train wheels with swedged spokes, gold chatons, perfect double sunk vitreous enamel dial, pristine case, and I think I see it on a @DaveK miracle braid lanyard. What’s not to like? Thanks for posting it.

Three of us are preparing our pocket watch exhibit during Heritage Park Railway Days in two weeks. Here, you see 80 pocket watches with matching descriptive labels for each watch. In addition to what you see, we also show railroad standard Seth Thomas World wall clocks, an exhibit of 12 Howard and Keystone Howard pocket watches, and railroad standard wrist watches from Bulova, Accutron, Rodania, Seiko, Hamilton Electric, and Elgin B W Raymond. We’re working on one or two feature displays as well. These watches will all be running and set to time when we’re done. We’ve been doing these exhibits for about 40 years, and we never tire of doing them.

yes your observation powers are great. Ironically, just after I installed the @DaveK lanyard I fumbled the watch and shattered the crystal. Thats why I needed a new one...

I’ll post more pictures of the display at the Park, during the event. The picture you saw here was preparatory to putting the finishing touches on the display during the exhibit. The process begins the evening before the show starts. On the day the show starts (Sept. 13), we can finish putting the display together (about 125-130 watches) and clocks, with labels), in about an hour. This is only possible when we do the preliminary organizing such as you saw in the picture of the watches.

Exactly. We can see it in this example from Calgary (Watson Bros).

They are nice watch to collect imho 👍👍

Nice! Ill build on the Calgary theme with my Omega (gift from @Canuck) from pre-Alberta Calgary, when it was still part of the NWT.

Canadian private label watches! Can’t get enough of them! In my collection, I have D E Black, Beall, G M Rioch, Dingwall, Solar, Logan, Murphy’s, and Birks. Mostly U S A made, but a few Swiss. Later today, I will return to the new owner, the L H Doll (NWT) Hamilton 940 to its new owner. I also have several Canadian Railway Time Service Hamiltons, and a C P Railway Waltham.

940 😍😍😍😍😍😍
I have a 940 and a 944. I like them both, but the 19-jewel grade 944 is one I particularly like. This one is a Canadian private label for D R Dingwall, Ltd., Winnipeg, Manitoba. I bought this one at an NAWCC mart about 40 years ago. The dial is marked LIMITED, giving no place name. Dozens of folks had looked at it, not recognizing it as a Canadian private label watch. I jumped on it like a duck on a June bug, and have enjoyed it ever since. The 944 has fewer jewels than the 940, but it has a jewelled motor barrel as indicated by the barrel arbor jewel on the barrel bridge, (as indicated by the arrow).

Look at that finishing.... This is a masterpiece 😍😍😍😍😍

I’ve been looking for a good 940/944 example for a long time.... Let's see in the future 😍

@Alpha showed an item of railroad regalia, above. It came to mind that I recently happened upon these lapel pins that had belonged to the present owner’s great uncle who belonged to several Brotherhoods, including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen & Enginemen. These are long service awards that are 10 karat gold with vitreous enamel enhancements. He also has pictures of his great uncle which were taken about 100 years ago.

I recently posted pictures of 80 of the 90 pocket watches that will be on display at the upcoming train show at our Heritage Park. We are also showing railroad standard clocks, and the railroad standard wrist watches shown herein. In the front row are 4 watches that are not running. One is a manual wind Elgin, two are automatic wind Ball Trainmasters, and one is a Hamilton Electric Railroader that doesn’t run. At the show, all these except the Hamilton Electric will be running and on time.
