@CBM1590

Aspirational Bunn to pair with that fine 1921 example. Keep on the lookout.

Circa 1931 with factory WGF case

That artifact around 6pm is on the crystal
As @DaveK astutely pointed out there is a hairline crack around 1:00. Should I pass on it for that and wait for a better dial? I think it can be had for $275. Thanks for the advice. I’m treading in new waters.

With the advice already given I can't for the life of me see your reason for hesitation.
I don't see that dial as any reason not to buy.
Its possible that once in hand you might have some regrets however any other buying platform is the same once in hand.
If this is a Facebook purchase with a face to face buy and pickup you have the best of all worlds, and exceptional Illinois bunn special at an incredibly low price.

Appreciated, sir. I just didn’t know how the dial affected the value or price.

Dials can often be found off eBay or similar if it is of concern.
If you were to have it serviced you could always get your Watch Maker to clean the dial, there are various techniques that can be used that would likely render the hairline close to invisible with a cursory glance with the visible marks which are usually just dust discolouring the hairline fault being removed or bleached out.

If the watch was too perfect you may hesitate to wear it which is another way of looking at it.

Illinois bunn specials are a highly desirable and collected RR grade PW, this one is prior to the Hamilton take over and to me for that reason more desirable but I am an unashamed fan of Illinois PW's

Find a pristine one, and take out a second mortgage! Buy it before someone else does, for goodness sake! The watch in my collection that I treasure most, has the worst enamel dial of any in my collection! My 1908 model Waltham Crescent Street.

$300 is very good....$275 is GREAT BUY.....after a service that hairline will only be seen with a loop, good eyes and much light.

As I mentioned before, the CASE makes a GREAT BUY an Excellent Buy

Wow, these are beautiful.

Can't say I'd ever be into collecting them, but I do wonder do you ever carry them? Like, where is it normal to ever just pull one out to tell the time, at the steam train club?

I carried a pocket watch today. A Keystone Howard series V. I wore it on my @DaveK miracle braid lanyard. This one is 113 years old! This one will no doubt be in someone’s collection in the year 2050, when Apple Watches will be 12 feet down in a landfill, somewhere! I won’t wear a watch of any description on Saturday as I have a bunch of scut work to do on our holiday trailer in preparation for camping in ten days. That people seldom wear pocket watches any more can only please those of us who collect pocket watches. The steam train club? Exactly! There are two train shows annually where I live. We exhibit about 100 railroad standard pocket watches at these shows.

I really like the cases with shoulders, the 173, 28, 181….

At that price, I’d take it!

From the NAWCC message board re: the Getty model Illinois movement. Is this one a Getty? The serial number is outside the range listed. I’ll locate my Illinois “blue book” ( Meggers & Erhardt) later today and check this one out.

https://mb.nawcc.org/threads/what-is-a-getty.16562/

https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/search/result/illinois/1530774

Edited later. The “Blue Book” doesn’t list this one as a Getty model. The link I uploaded specifies that Getty models fit within a specified s# range. The Blue Book doesn’t give the whole story as to what makes a Getty model, a Getty model. Anyone know? Looks the same.

I was not aware that the single exposed winding wheel and click is what constituted a Getty model. That was a very interesting thread from the NAWCC, Canuck, and one I've never read, thanks for sharing it.

Before today, I had no inkling that my Sangamo could potentially be a Getty. It certainly falls within the mentioned serial number range.

I have seen evidence that Illinois models outside the s# range listed in the NAWCC message board article I referenced, being called “Getty” models. So it might appear that 16-size Illinois models with the crescent shaped click and the single winding wheel, as designed by Getty, are called “Getty” models. The “blue book” on Illinois doesn’t appear to clarify this matter.

I saw that description in the NAWCC, and if that is the only qualifier, then my Model 5, A. Lincoln is also a Getty. It does fall well outside of the mentioned serial number range, however.

Thanks for introducing me to a new rabbit hole to explore.

Hamilton 4992B for the US Govt
Circa 1941

Probably a civilian conversion post WWII, definitely a recase. There were kits to buy at the time to convert from 24 to 12 hour.

but a handsome dial and early 992B movt. (Hack feature and pendant set made it a 4992B). Plus a very legible dial/hands combo plate of goodness.

and a gaggle of Canadian Geese must have decided they liked our Texas Heat and homesteaded. Squatters 😁
