Hello everyone. First time poster / long time lurker here.

I recently won on Ebay a Cal 750 sparkle dial ( gold on gold filled ) Seamaster. This is my first "real" watch and I purchased it as a project.

My intent is light refinishing of the case and for this to be my first full tear down and rebuild of a movement.

Disclaimer: Yes I have read and understand the concerns about refinishing the case, brushing direction, polishing a gold filled case, etc. As I am not doing this for anyone but myself, I am good with wearing any mistakes I make, but I plan to maintain the original appearance as much as possible. Same goes for the movement.

Overall it is in nice condition. The watch runs and the day / date and quickset work. The omega on the crown is very well defined. The etching on the back is still deep and legible. The worst damage is the scratches made by someone attempting to open the caseback (not me).

I am sure I will have more questions as I go but here are a few I could use input on:

1. Where can I source the seals for the watch ? I need a caseback seal, and I assume there is a crown tube seal and maybe one in the crown?
2. If I get a gold bracelet, how do I know which endlinks to get? I see a bunch of generic bracelets on amazon, will those fit? Is there a better option?
3. How thick is "gold filled" plating? I read it is 5% of the weight of the case but in reality, what does this work out to? The transition where it changes from gold to stainless makes it appear to be .010"-.015" thick. Is it actually that thick?.
4. Where can I get a mainspring? I do not own winders so I would just replace it.
5. Is there supposed to be lume in the dark stripe in the middle of each index? Is there a little spot of lume at the end of each index ?

Thanks everyone for any input you can offer.

-Dan

1. Generic seals can be used. You’ll just have to confirm the diameter. I don’t believe the crown seals can be changed as it’s a sealed unit.
2. Do a forum search. There’s a thread on which endlinks match which case reference.
3. Varies. I don’t know on this ref.
4. Any decent parts supplier such as Cousins.
5. No lume in the black areas. It’s meant to be painted black.

Personally I think the 1098/540 (or 547) is the best bracelet for these, but there are a couple of other factory options as well. The deciding factor maybe availability as gold plated bracelets are less common than steel ones, particularly in good condition

why replace the mainspring ?

It's pretty common to replace the mainspring when doing a full service. Omega certainly does it, it's considered a wear part.

Although few pictures are not showing too much detail looks like case isn’t bad. After you clean case and put it through ultrasound it may look much better and a light buff with jewelers cloth may be enough. Can always go back later
If you want water resistance then you should consider replacing crown with service one with proper seals.
Good luck and show us the finished result

why replace the mainspring ?
is it broken ?
I just assumed "why not" if I will be doing a full service. I don't have the skill to know if the mainspring is "good" so better safe than sorry.

Thank you sir. Yes it is pretty good except a few dings in the gold cap. I wanted to remove them but I am unsure how thick the gold "filling" is.

Will an omega AD sell me the crown or is that not something they will do?
