Buying my first watch (Omega Constellation). Please help

Hi all,

I'm very new to the world of watch collecting and graduating from university next week. To mark this milestone, I'd like to buy a watch. I have found a Vintage Omega Constellation (Ref. 167.021 Cal. 721). I found the watch on eBay via a seller from Japan with a 97.6% positive feedback rate. The watch is a very good price and I am very close to pulling the trigger. However I wanted to ask on here if the watch is genuine, the seller has not include pictures of the inside, I have messaged and ask for this and am waiting for those. Is that a red flag that the seller has not included them? I have brought cameras from Japan via eBay before so I do trust sellers from there. Unlike cameras, watches aren't my field of expertise. Anyways, I assume that most of you on here are older and wiser than me therefore I'd really appreciate any advice/help in verifying the authenticity of this model. Many thanks - Maximilian

"Genuine" is the operative word.......How do you define it in relation to this watch? What specifically do you want to know?

Always a red flag if you see no movement pictures and none are provided when asked.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply! I'd like to know if anything on the dial looks off in anyway i.e markings/text/hands etc or if it all looks genuine. Same in regard to the back of the watch as well as the crown. When looking at these watches is there anything in particular I should be looking for? Thanks

Did you google the reference number and find any images matching your example?

You’re operating in fairly specialist territory with this reference of constellation.

case looks pretty good, dial looks correct.
Should have a 712 (not 721)
Crown possibly correct, it seems, as with c cases, that there are a couple of variations for this reference.

Whilst uncommon, these Connies haven’t found their market yet, so don’t over pay.

OVDB listing.

Hi!

I got the images back from the inside of the watch. The reference number matches and the caliber no. on the inside says 712. You mentioned about not over paying, what would you say I should roughly be paying for this model?

Many thanks,
Maximilian

As I mentioned above Maximilian, this reference of Constellation is something of a specialist territory.

They don’t come up for sale very often, compared to other Connies, and they aren’t as sought after as earlier or even contemporary references, due to the style and the movement being an ultra thin.
However, this doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t appeal to you or that there is anything wrong with the movement.

price is directly related to desirability, so even though these are special watches and less common than their contemporary cousins, they shouldn’t command the same price.

if you google the reference, you’ll find a range of prices from reasonable to rediculous (see price chart below for an average) but there aren’t too many reference points.

it’s often easier if you tell us what the asking is and we can advise if if it’s a good deal or not.

Hello,

Firstly, thanks for getting back to me and thank you for your help. The seller is asking £584 although as this is coming from Japan along with import/customs fees overall I’ll be paying £714. The ultra thin movement is what really appeals to me about this watch and ideally I’d rather try and find one for sale in the UK however I have been looking yet no luck, as you said these don’t come up very often.

Best,
Maximilian

well, given the condition of the watch, I think £584 is a very good price.
Even with the import tax, you are getting a very nice watch for less than the price of any other contemporary Connie reference.
The fact that you are looking for an ultra thin is a real bonus.

Notice the black ring in the case back and on the rotor?
this is called rotor rub, it is quite common and usually easily fixed with a service.
if the watch hasn’t been fully serviced, you will have to allow for that, say another £2-300.
