Like all lefties I am very capable of adapting to a world that just wasn't meant for us. I don't forsee any problems using the watch.

Tough choice. Reality is first one ia one of many once you commit to going down the Speedmaster route.

If you have kids look for a birth year speedy from their birth year. If you are under 45 years old look for your birth year speedy.

Or most any LE speedy.

Once you buy a few, then you can work towards a Decades Collection.

Welcome to OF.

I’d advise you to get a new hesalite with a nice discount from one of the sellers here. Awesome box, extra straps and swag, papers and warranty.

Best bet is to cruise into an Omega Boutique and try a few on for size. Once you know the size you think looks/feels best for you it will be easier to choose a model that speaks to you.

Yes, by all means go to a store to use their expertise, but then go buy it somewhere else. 🤦 🫨

Maybe I'm particularly peeved about this behavior because I'm a retailer (different industry though).

Hi @SaltWaterNTarmac

Welcome to the forum. I suppose how flexible you are with your budget will also determine the watch you may ultimately select.

If you can I would suggest you try on both modern and vintage versions of the Speedmaster and to spend time on the forum to see if you can narrow down your choice.

The more you learn before your purchase the happier you will be with the outcome.

Hello All, I am looking for advice on what to get for my first Speedmaster. This is my first swiss watch as well. I have been enamored with the Speedmaster since first becoming interested in watches a few months ago and am now ready to buy!

My first thought was I wanted the sapphire sandwich model because I love the display back and the extra resilience of the sapphire as I will be wearing this watch a lot. But lately I've been thinking I want to pay up for a Speedy Tuesday just because it is so beautiful and I love the limited nature of special editions. I also really like the 57 Trilogy Speedmaster.

Any advice you can give on which Speedmaster I should get is greatly appreciated, it can be vintage, some other special edition, or tell me to save the money and forget all that! Tips on where to buy would be great too.
My first and only speedmaster

For starters, you may want to get a pair of matching shoes. 😉

In all seriousness, is there a budget? Sounds as though it's a good one, but specifics would help. Also, your wrist circumference would be helpful in terms of measurement. Either way the 60th Anniversary Speedy should be fine. It's all a matter of preference, but in general watches are too big these days. However you should note that a measurement doens't tell the whole story. Watches can vary in terms of their wrist presence and the size of the dial for instance can make smaller watches seem bigger and vice verse. My recommendation:

1) Get a Speedy Tuesday if you can. Fantastic watch and I think they're only going to go up with inventory looking more and more scarce.
2) If you can't find a Speedy Tuesday or better yet you've got a budget for both, get a 60th Anniversary Speedmaster. I have no affiliation with them, but have purchased one of my watches from them in the past, but European Watch Company has a few below MSRP. Condition should be good, but I would inspect the photos and maybe call for more details as they aren't very conservative with their ratings.
3) You can always get a Speedy Pro, so I'd save for a while.
4) You can wait on a Reverso at the moment unless you've got a really big budget. Best steel version I have yet to see in the grey market and apart from one of the limited editions the current lineup is so-so.

At the end of the day get what speaks to you. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

My two cents, look for a FOIS. Straight lugs and a slightly more old school look than a moon watch, has lots of the elements of the 57, at a lessor price point

Thank you for all the welcomes! Firstly I will definitely just hang around the forum for a month or so before I make my purchase. I want it to be as informed as possible.

As for budget, while I can afford a resold Speedy Tuesday ~$8k US knowing that whatever I have purchased isn't losing value is good for peace of mind (I'm certainly not looking to wheel and deal watches).

So far I am liking the idea of just buying a regular speedy pro, possibly sapphire, as a starter watch and then finding out what I really like and getting that later on, possibly whatever they release for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. I just don't want to be hitting myself if the ST shoots up in price or FOIS or 60th etc.

Best bet is to cruise into an Omega Boutique and try a few on for size. Once you know the size you think looks/feels best for you it will be easier to choose a model that speaks to you.
The boutique I went to only had a regular Speedy Pro. I tried it on and it felt great. Smaller than I thought which makes me hesitant on the 60th anniversary version. I don't see how I'd be able to try on any of the special editions I like.

.
Oh ya I'll wait a while on that. Since becoming interested in watches I've just lined up which ones I want to get, but rest assured the Speedy is the first and most important.

Now we know it's for your right arm. A speedmaster is not for you.
Just watch any lefty using pushers. 😗 They have this weird unco thing going on 😉

My 'unco" is quite cool, if you ask me.

Thanks for playing, though.

In your last post, you mentioned that you like the regular Speedy Pro, possibly sapphire.

Seems like you already have your answer. Go for it, you can't go wrong with this choice. And just in case you need more validation...

There’s a lot more wrong with that picture than just the wrist. Bond bracelet? On a Speedy Tuesday? Are you mad? 😀

the whole system is broken and its the fault of the watch companies. Don't blame the customer for gaming it to save $

My favourite 3 modern Speedys, in no particular order:

FOIS

“Trilogy”

Pre-1998 Speedy Pro. Why pre-1998? Because they still used tritium until then and I think these have aged tremendously:

The 1990’s Speedys are a ton of value to my eyes and available for quite cheap and in top condition if you’re patient.

The yellow lume is nicer than the modern ones for me.

To be honest that's really what I needed.

I hate myself for now planning which Speedmasters I'll get after my first now. I originally wanted a Planet Ocean as my second but now my browser tabs are filled with vintage Speedmaster listings...

I prefer the modern lume. I don't care for yellow teeth or lume. To the OP, special editions are a great way to separate buys from an excessive amount of money for a different dial (Snoopy, anyone?). I bought the classic model with Hesalite because I was shopping for the watch that was actually NASA approved for space missions. I also shifted mine to a high quality, matte finished brown alligator strap because it has a more vintage look to my eye but the stock bracelet is very comfortable and more durable (duh). I find the iconic Speedmaster moon watch is really the only modern Omega that holds much appeal to me. I prefer Rolex sport watches over Omega's other offerings.
