Bumper rattling

I bought this 'bumper' recently. It keeps time, but there was a rattle when wearing it.

So, I opened the back and found a loose spring in there. I am pretty new to watches. Is this a damper spring for the bumper ? I'm guessing it's repairable, or do I return it ?

There was no mention of any internal problems with the watch in the ad.

The movement can be repaired and unless a vintage watch is described as ‘serviced’ with evidence of such work, it’s prudent to assume it will need one. That in isolation wouldn’t be cause for a return imo.

A much bigger issue is the dial, which has been refinished and kills collector value.

Thanks. I wasn't sure on the dial. It does look too 'good' now you mention it.

Buying these watches is an absolute minefield.

These bumpers are generally pretty durable movements. Hopefully the spring is the only issue with your “rattling.” It should be serviced for reliable use.

Anyone who’s been in the vintage watch hobby for a significant period of time has made mistakes and missed issues with a watch at one time or another. I certainly have.

This forum has a ton of great experience and friendly advice. A lot of people post pictures of potential purchases to get feedback before buying. It’s a great way to gain confidence and learn along the way. Good luck!

The spring attaches just like the other spring, and yes, provides cushion for the rotor travel.

As for returning it, I guess it depends on the seller and the terms you bought it under, but unless the photos were somehow deceptive, using the redial as an excuse is probably not gonna fly.

Personally, the uneven dinginess of the dial is more off putting than the unoriginality.

It is a minefield at first, but becomes much easier with experience. As you spend more time looking at dials, you will quickly recognize when the fonts are not correct, as in this case. The sub-dial is also an obvious giveaway on this dial. It is off-center and doesn't fill the depression properly. Until you feel confident with your knowledge, you can ask for feedback from the experts on the forum, and you can also consider shopping in the forum listings, which are generally pretty accurate.
