Would be also very interesting with a set of red hands 😉👎

Could have gone in so many directions with this one! But I felt like I'd keep it on the classic side since it was my first go, and I wasn't sure how it'd turn out. Who knows though, next time I accidentally end up with a franken Speedy maybe we'll see what comes out the other end.... 😁

Does anyone make totally custom dials for Speedmaster Pro's?

For example, could someone make a TinTin dial that was a black dial with a blue & white outer circle instead of a red & white outer circle?

On an otherwise completely stock Speedmaster Pro watch, that would be pretty impressive IMHO.

Someone posted a dial they had repainted last year, and they were offering a custom dial painting service. I would not have an issue getting a new dial for a modern Speedmaster and having someone perform a custom paint job. The original dial can be stored, and reinstalled later when one is looking to sell.

A few of mine
It is a great dial. I wasn't sure how it would work in the DLC-coated case, but the black lends a hint of a minty greenish hue to the dial in a way that the steel case doesn't quite. It's awesome!

It looks good against the black 👍

I had the same dial and I just couldnt get used to the cream colour of the dial and eventually changed the dial for something else.

Here’s mine. 145022-71. With Original Mk2 racing dial and hands fitted that I had lying around for over 10 years. Fellow forum member helped with 861 31mill Movement and case. Can’t even remember how I came by all the other parts! Nothing intended to deceive- just like the look as do a number of others as my watchmaker had several offers whilst working on it. Won’t sell it though. Too long in the making and now a regular wearer.

it is a bit crazy that if you removed the Mark 11 on the dial it would be worth 20x as much!

My latest, there a several albinos with similar mods. I'm going to modify the previous name I've seen attributed to similar mods - this is the Pandemic.

Okay, so I might be a little off topic here... I already have modern Omegas, untouched, original straps/bracelets etc., I was torn between a Moonwatch and a FOIS and ultimately went for the FOIS - correct choice in my eyes. I’ve always wondered about a cheap way of acquiring a Moonwatch as a beater to accompany my other watches. I’m sure it’s been asked before but is it doable to take parts/service parts and create the watch from scratch? - I am aware the forum would lean towards ‘definitely not!’ as it would of course be a franken watch, however, I wouldn’t be looking for a collectable, purist watch just a cheap way of getting one on the wrist! I would draw the line at using fake parts though and am aware I’d be stepping into a minefield, the parts would have to be correct for each other and not made up of different iterations from different eras. More than anything it could just be a fun project (I wouldn’t know where to start though) or would it be better just to save for a complete original; I think I might know the answer already 😉 Thanks!

Yes, doable but not as cheap as you might think. I have one in the making... a Japan racing with sapphire caseback, Forstner flat link and still thinking about an aftermarket DON bezel to get closer to the 60s look...

Oh, nice, good luck with it! I’m just looking to make a bog standard hesalite Moonwatch - first task is to find serial numbers of the parts I need then get googling...

Very interesting 👍.

I thought this thread was going to be about one of those magazines you can buy that allow you to build something over a long period of time - with a cheaper first edition, then monthly copies with other components and instructions 😵‍💫

That’s the version that ends up costing you a million dollars !

I've often thought about doing this but the speedys for donors are getting awefilly pricey.
I sold my apollo 11 and miss it now and wanna get another but am having a hard time sourcing one at a decent price.

I had a (very) quick look into it - best I could find was a NOS 1861 for about £999, figured by the time I’ve sourced all the parts and paid someone to assemble them I’m probably pushing the price of a second hand one already...

This thread is almost 6 years old - but as a guy who has loved speedmasters forever, and is currently hunting for his first; the idea of making one almost 'from scratch' or with bits and pieces is fascinating to me.

Any tips or places to start as far as getting into this?
