British exit from EU and the VAT

While I in no way wish to hear a political debate, for those outside UK who wonder why some people want to leave it’s this:

So while some of us feel it’s a big family, the EU is a big family with five elders who dictate all the rules.

While those elders are unelected, there is no process - no democratic process- to remove them.

.

Not sure I entirely understand or agree. In the EU, as far as I know:

- MEPs are elected to the European Parliament by voters in their countries
- Potential EU commissioners, the executive branch, are proposed by the democratically elected Govts of member states, one per member state for a fixed term
- the EU president is put forward by the EU Council, for a fixed term, the EU Council again comprises ministers from member states
- the whole lot have to be agreed and voted on by MEPs

Clumsy and unwieldy perhaps, but it seems to me to be no less democratic than what we have here in the UK - with an unelected Head of State, an unelected Upper Chamber and an unwritten Constitution. Also, our Prime Minister appoints their Cabinet, and unlike say the US, there is no scrutiny of appointees (which at least MEPs get to do with EU Commissioners...)

On a personal transaction VAT would be charged by the supplying company and not be able to be reclaimed by the individual.
The assumption here from the beginning was that this was a personal transaction, for example, a watch purchase.

Yes making your comment that VAT wouldn't be charged incorrect. The individual would still be liable for VAT for a transcation between 2 EU countries.

Simple rule I apply is assume VAT and duty on anything i buy coming into the country from a country outside of the EU. Therefore post Brexit anything I buy from the UK (Which is a reasonable amount at the moment) would be liable for VAT and duty (again assuming no applicable trade agreements).

Actually, losing easy access to the UK market is going to be a pain in the ass
