I would call this more than a rumor, but not yet established fact . . .

Time will tell.

https://professionalwatches.com/breitling-to-add-a-third-watch-brand/

This was first offered up by Miss Tweed which is a paywalled site where I do not have access:

https://misstweed.com/articles/breitling-to-unveil-gallet-revival-next-month

If this "news" turns out to be true, it'll be good for the all but defunct Gallet brand.

I have some familiarity with Gallet. They have been incorporated in Zurich under at least two names, one of which filed for bankruptcy a while back.

The brand was also incorporated in the US, but here too there were difficulties.

I understand that the IP for the trademark was kept separate from the IP for the manufacturing and distribution as a way of preserving the value of the brand should the design, manufacturing and distribution ever go belly up.

So . . .

If Breitling has obtained a clear title to the brand (or formed some sort of partnership) and intends to position the brand below Breitling itself, this has potential.

Universal Geneve had some street cred and was reasonably recognized as a pretty good brand in its time, but Gallet? Hardly anyone has ever heard the name, it's really trying to push a rock up hill.

Well, that is one person's opinion. 馃槈

I would not claim that Gallet is as well-known as U.G., but it is a venerable brand with a rich horological history.

I am happier to see Breitling acquire the brand (if such is confirmed) than say . . . if it were to go the way of Nivada Grenchen or Excelsior Park.

Cheers,

Joe

So how much would you be willing to pay for a brand spankin' new resurrected Gallet? $10k, $15k? Because that is where prices tend to land for these dug up, obsolete brands.

An honest answer would be "that depends."

One can or may ask the same question related to U.G. or any other revived brand . . . and I suspect most would respond "that depends."

Am I buyer of any watch at the time?
Which models will be revived?
What movements will be utilized?

There is scant information right now.

The articles cited indicate that the major watch brands have each suffered lagging sales and that the U.G. releases will likely lag initial expectations, so who really knows what will happen?

I do like the designs . . .

Perhaps a new Harry Truman Flight Officer?

That would certainly be a hard sell. But the brand has some enthusiasts, and maybe Breitling would like to have some watches hitting different price points.

It's better to revive a watch brand than to wipe it off the map. If it is true, bravo breitling.

I'm looking forward to the 'spin' Breitling puts on it <roll eyes>.
Love Gallet! Good quality back in the day. Equal or better than the old Breitlings. Maybe not quite as well known as UG.

Well hopefully not 10-15k because I can definitely get behind the idea of one of these on my wrist while I'm flying around. That being said with so many nice alternatives available on the vintage market it would be hard to justify something similar at that price point in my humble opinion. I'm sure they would appeal to a niche. Definitely keen to see if anything materializes.

It'd be worth it if they brought back the Excelsior Park movement.

Upon reflection, I do not know why anyone who may think of themselves as a watch enthusiast would root for a venerable defunct brand to stay dead?

If such a brand can be resurrected, why not?

No one is obligated to buy any watch.

If someone once loved GM's Pontiac or Oldsmobile brands and GM was intending to resurrect them, why would I say something like "Let the dead stay buried?" I am not obligated to buy either, though I once appreciated the GTO and the 442.

I find Panerai watches to be clunky and not very attractive, for example, but what business do I have saying anything negative about Panerai?

If you love'em, then celebrate.

Breitling needs to bring back some classics, and say enough of all the gimmick watches that look cheap. Basically everything i see in the window of the shop. Give me a new titanium aerospace maybe.

Can't wait to see their new website, with the "History" or "Our Story" page.
Might make interesting reading, depending on what's there and what's not there.

Hope they don't try to claim being the oldest watch brand in history.

100% agree. I would recommend the new Gallet owners to avoid childish "marketing" with BS dates and data. If we do not know something, it is ok, we will probably discover it later, but please do not invent stories. Gallet does not need them.
