Yes!
Will it be successful? Time will tell. It's easy to say right now they will fail. I just think we have to wait and see the watch. Maybe it's worth 8k and people will agree. I do think if they fail it will be quick an meteoric and we'll probably know with the first output.

Or maybe they want to bump up Breitling and have UG take its place?
We’ve seen this before (eg Omega 😗)

I think a better model would be the re-launch of Girard Perregaux as a more upscale brand in the 1990's. GP made watches at varying price points up until the late 1970's, then went somewhat dormant (at least from a US perspective) under various corporate ownership groups for about 20 years.

GP is a very good example. Great history behind and many patents. They had a resurrection and they didn't do too good in the beginning.
I think it took them over 20 years to kind of stabilise and have some decent market value and recognition. It’s still a nieche brand. Their most marketed model is Laureato which is a mix of PP Nautilus and AP RO. It was relaunched in 2016.
Its around 15k usd and its really meant to be an alternative to those who cannot afford or get a Nautilus/RO.

PS: what I personally dont know is if Breitling can use the Genta design for the Polerouter case? i think this is very important.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my feeling is that vintage and new are two very different markets.
For example, as a vintage guy, while I proudly own a Polerouter and I would like to have a UG chrono from the '40s, I would never buy a new UG, regardless of it's price.
As for re-editions, I'm not aware if some recent cases (i.e. Autavia) have been successful or not. And, in any case, I think it is a very different situation for re-editions by brands that still produce and sell watches as opposed to defunct brands.

Maybe a good reference would be Heuer. a niche brand that made racing chronographs only known to vintage watch enthusiasts, except that someone turned it into Tag Heuer, now owned by LVMH. Which as far as I’m aware makes watches from mid range to high end.

If UG made a 35 mm reedition of the exotic Ninas or Tricompaxes, I would absolutely go for a reedition.
the problem is that they’re going to do the same as with the Heuer Skipper, it’s going to end up 39mm and 8k or 9k euros.

For me, the charm of UG is maximized at 35mm. That’s what I fell hard for and that’s what I mostly own. Sadly I doubt we shall see that size in the new line.

Thread drift about Heuer becoming « TAG » Heuer, an interesting episode now completely absent from the offical company website and which had been somewhat mysterious to me.

Maybe every car enthusiast knows what I’m reading on Wikipedia (and which I hope is mostly true)? that TAG, a private company owned by a Saudi businessman was involved in Formula 1 since the late 1970s, became a shareholder of McLaren Group, hence the name of the “TAG Porsche” turbo engine in the mid 80s.
TAG Aviation managed private planes, and held assets in luxury airport infrastructures.

TAG stands for “Techniques d’avant garde” (avant garde techniques).

In 1978, the French newspaper of record Le Monde recounted the group invested massively in France, banking, real estate, private jets and was said to have ties to the Saudi royal family.

The French newspaper Liberation in 1999 reported, the billionnaire owner of the TAG group had also been an “advisor” to the Saudi defense minister and involved in the negociation of weapon sales contracts between France and Saudi Arabia.

Guess the chronograph business was a bit of sidebar 😜
Anyhow, TAG’s Heuer ownership only lasted from 1985-1999, again according to Wikipedia.

If the revived UG product they create is strong and positioned as premium there's no reason why they can't aim for a market that's higher than where Brietling is currently. I hope they take their cue from how ALS did it in the mid-90s - resurrecting a dead Swiss watch brand based on its heritage but as a competitor to premium watches of the day.

Look where they are today. That's a good storyline to emulate and aim for.

This is hearsay, but a swiss friend of a friend who was hired at UG to work on the rebrand, says it will be EXPENSIVE watches. Im seeing messages above talking about $10k tricompaxes - I dont think that’s what they’re going for. Brace yourselves lads

I am impressed by the great work that Breitling is doing today, even though it is not a brand that has watches that I like, I really appreciate all the publicity and effort that they are generating, I think that UG could not be in better hands.

And yes, Georges Kern himself said in an interview with Hodinkee that they will be watches with prices above Breitling, so exceptional quality is expected!
