Body Aches… What’s Hurting Today?

Shoulders. Hips. Neck. Back. They take turns. Sometimes the bastards conspire. They’ve recently conscripted my right knee.

I’ve had PMR since 2022 and have, thankfully, almost beaten it to the curb. I’m down to 1mg of Prednisone every 6 days. But I do get tiny reminders it’s still there.

I play drums pretty much every day. At my age, I find my back and shoulders hurt more than ever now, especially the morning after 3 hour rehearsals (yes, I’m a lightweight compared to the lads in Rush - and they’re nearly 10 years older). Gym is now down to twice a week to save energy for rehearsal.

And now the middle phalanx on my ring finger aches. Only that one. I’m grateful for that. When I was in my mid-twenties 40 years ago, I thought I was invincible.

What a maroon.🤨

Where to begin! Maybe it's best not too.
The last few years have seen a litany of aches and pains. Starting with both torn left and right knee ACL, suffered with that for 18 months before surgery and almost 18 months after before full recovery then at the end of that both left and right rotator cuffs, one a 50% tear and the other a 60 % tear.

10 months ago had an anaphylactic response to an anti-biotic which really has incapacitated me with continual major chest pains, as of yet no medical diagnosis has been determined though they put a stent in believing that was the problem now even 10 months after I am completely sedentary, I peeled potatoes for dinner the other night and it took a few hours to recover from that! Am unable to do any upper body work with out needing either bed rest or complete relaxation, 10 minutes of work gives me 2 days of pain, awful stuff. They tried Prednisone to no substantive effect. What really gets me other than totally fυcking my life up is that they can't even tell me what to do about it.

The one saving grace has been it's confined to upper body work so I can still walk and get about with out affecting the condition. There are other numerous aches and pains but to be honest they don't even get noticed with what's currently going on.
Normally all these things are age related but in my case fortunately they are not, prior to all this crap I was a fit and pain free as a 30 to 40 year old ( I am 65 ) with not a physical care in the world, life can f you up!
My life is on hold at the moment and the amount of things I need to do around my property go unanswered as I can no longer do them, best I can get away with is mowing the lawn 😀

I'm pretty fortunate, too...no chronic pain after 60...yet. My most severe pain seems to be the result of a steady cacophony of lies and insanity from the White House.Wait, is it still there? I've completely forgotten what life was like without that sack of shit.
May I ask you: how many millions of illegal migrants here in Europe may I send to you? Tell us the number and the name of your town ::psy::

I've had a headache for 40 years, goes from 6 to 9 on the 1-10 scale. Lots of other aches and pains too. Getting old sucks.

I'm fortunate as an old geezer to be completely pain free. I lift weights 5 days a week, intermittent fast everyday 18/6 and I don't eat any meat or consume food/drink that has an ingredient label. I recognize my approach is not for most, but it works for me (all my vitals, weight and blood tests are in the normal range). About 15 years ago, I was not doing well, over weight, developed several health conditions and my blood work was terrible. I was able to shed the weight and reverse my medical conditions. It was a wake up call that I answered.

Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician known as the father of modern medicine said: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."

Not an ache today , but about 3 months ago just out of nowhere I developed a pain in my lower back , I literally couldn't sleep because of the pain . Luckily I managed to get a Dr's appointment next day and after a few questions I was advised to take pain killers & try to.kerp moving about & not yo sit down for long periods of time , and if no improvement in 3 weeks to return for another consultation. 3 weeks later the pain was no better & the pain killers didnt make any difference , so back to the Dr's and after another round of questions the outcome was more pain killers . Next day the pain was gone from the bottom of my back but had somehow moved to the top of my right leg & I had needles & pins in my right foot & toes , back to the Dr's & was told it was Sciatica and it will probably take 6-9 weeks for the pain to go away .Ive been pretty much pain free all my life until this & I now have a lot more sympathy for anyone with back pain . I wouldn't wish it on anyone , my mobility was restricted and I struggled to dress myself or get in or out of a car , tie my shoelaces etc . But I've been pain free for just over a week & now have no pain or any symptoms so I've a new found appreciation of how much I took my health & mobility for granted .

… And what are you doing about it?

I am discovering new body aches on a regular basis.

Disclaimer: I am 9 years cancer free and lucky to still ride my bike, kayak, lift weights and go for walks…

But there is almost always something that hurts and my wife has given up on telling me that I am not 25 anymore.

Examples:

Pain:

A few years ago it was my left hip.

Likely from years of wearing a heavy police belt but also from hardcore cycling and also having been hit by a truck in 2006.

Response:

X-rays. I do not need a new hip.
Yoga. Did not work.
Physio. Limited results.
Chiropractor. Better results.

Additional contribution: I am right handed so I started to behave like a lefty. Opening doors with my opposite hand, getting into the car differently, tasking my left leg and hip more.

It’s much better now.

I do my hip exercises every other day. A combination of those received from the chiropractor and some that I found online. The exercises take only a few minutes.

I do them on weight workout days.

-----------------

Today’s New ache…

My left hand, between the first and second knuckle.

Since I am in my shop, may as well include a photo with an awl that points to today’s ache. Complete with a watch, to honour the OF site.

This pain evokes what is felt after a good workout on the heavy bag. Except I haven’t used the heavy bag!

Response: For now, will give it a few days but may put ice on it.

To be continued.

What about you?
My suggestion (from someone suffering from hip pain/tightness for decades) - get regular massages with concentration on the hips/lower back. I found that does better than any chiropractor.

First of all, 9 years cancer free is fantastic and the fact that you're still cycling, kayaking, lifting weights and walking says a lot. That's something to be proud of.

For me, it's always my left foot/ankle. The damage and repair they incurred assures me that daily pain is just a way of life now.

For my regular aches and pains it's usually in my shoulders, forearms, and hands for a day or two if I do any strenous work.

I stretch a lot more these days than I did when I was younger and that helps some.
I have a good friend with a jacuzzi and she lets me come over and use it anytime and that helps a lot.

NSAIDs are my best friends.

Yes agreed and they were doing a reasonably good job for me until they decided that they needed to put the cardiac stent in which then meant with the mandatory medications of blood thinners that NSAIDs were off the table for fear of internal bleeding, so I am actually worse off than earlier on.

Just turned 60. Interesting transition for me was from when I would wake up and something was hurting, but I knew why - to now I wake up and something is hurting but I have no idea why. Only thing for me is to just accept it and keep moving, and stuff usually does not get too out of hand.

On the interweb I keep seeing lists of things you can do that signal you are in good physical shape over 50 or 60. Most aren't too bad, but one seems a bridge too far: Sit down on the floor with your feet out in front of you then manage to get to the standing position without using your hands at all.

Another good measure is a dead hang. Grasping a pull up bar and letting you body hang. It sounds easy, but far from it. I can do two minutes but not a second more. (Not advisable if you have any issues with your shoulders)
