Inquiring minds need to know if this model of Blancpain 50 Fathoms watch will perform reliably on those 300 foot dives.

I want the Pacific Ocean one and the wife wants the Atlantic ocean however, they are super limited distribution. Not even KoP will have one.

I think they did a nice job aesthetically, but $400 for a non-serviceable watch pushes the limit for me personally. If they were actually available near me, i would like give in and buy the Arctic model.

I had my flutter with Swatch watches 30 years ago, in the early 90's. It's a dead end collecting plastic watches and the amount you have "invested" racks up quickly.

If this were $1000-1500 with an entry level, serviceable mech movement it it it would make a lot more sense to me

that said, should either of the following be released…

Last I checked Diver AND Scuba required iso certification… if they are written on a watch.

yet no mention of the depth rating.

I feel the same. I like the look of the Artic model. If this were priced the same as the moonswatch, I'd probably get one. But $400 + difficulty of finding probably means I won't get one.

I do love a full lume bezel though!

I am enjoying the YouTube commentators struggle to pronounce Blancpain.

"blonck-pawn" is my favourite so far

A big piece of this is marketing the Blancpain name to a larger audience. Most have heard of Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer.... but far, far fewer know about Blancpain. This is Blancpain using Swatch to increase brand awareness as nobody will purchase one of these INSTEAD of a Fifty Fathoms... perhaps in addition to.

I was telling another member of the local makerspace (who had never heard of Blankpain) That most of these would be bought by flippers who will hold onto them.

As much as I would like one; The price is well outside of my current cash flow. I do not really need another watch. I still have a few swatches in their boxes, which I never wear.

Somewhere I have a set of Taco bell star wars toys. Still in their bags. I also have a few Burger king Disney dolls. These remain in a box.

I have to say, after watching the Hodinkee video the watch does look like a cheap toy. It doesn’t look nearly as good as the still shots and renders. He even has the blue one in the video which was my favorite of the bunch.

It's just not a $400 watch to me. At that price, it should be serviceable, be it quartz or most basic mechanical, although I can't imagine what that mechanical movement might be. $400 for a dead-end watch that doesn't even look that good to me makes it a big no for me. I don't even get Swatch as a brand so that's unsurprising. I'm not the target market for these watches, however, so whatever.

I love the color blue, But the orange one looks really tasty.

A couple weeks ago I bid on an Orange dive swatch, but was outbid in the last minutes. Not sure what I would have done with it. As noted swatches tend to sit in boxes.

The laser cutter experiment did have some promising results. So I may be able to cut out simple plastic acrylic movement holders. Perhaps even some cases for my landerons.

Eventually with higher resolution 3d printing and laser etching plastic watchmaking might be the future. Eventually I would like to get my hands on one to see how unreparable they really are.

There is talk in the makerspace of building a plastic filament recycler. I have a vacuum form machine. At one time I was wanting to make an injection shot press. Not to mention a shredder. So if the other makers are thinking of such equipment ...

Not sure how sustainable any of this is. We are almost 1/4 of the way into the current century. It is always interesting how much people cling to the prior one or romanticize others. I keep saying the 14th is now as valid as the 18th or the 20th.

There are people alive now for what the 22 century will be their future. Somehow though I doubt these candy colored watches will look as good then as they do now. Or will they be flavored to taste and smell as good as they look? Like a vape dispenser? Or ball point pen?

Now I want a hybrid Pez dispenser/watch that emits candy on the hour (or quarter.)

It’s going to be interesting to see how many people show up— because in Paris, I can only see one store selling those. As opposed to the stores below which sell the MoonSwatch. (I presume the stores with the white Swiss cross.)

They're obviously going to sell a ton of these watches, but I agree that the whole limited lifespan thing kind of flies in the face of environmental responsibility IMO. The Sistem51 is a neat concept and very cool from a technical perspective in terms of how it's fully machine assembled and regulated officially to -/+6spd. And as advances come along and they're able to improve the process and get it to a lifespan of 15-20 years guaranteed that would be pretty sweet. But even then it's still disposable. If I'm going to buy a disposable watch for a few hundred bucks, I'm going to own that and just get a MoonSwatch that I think overall looks more to my tastes and is less expensive to boot.
