Dear OF collectors.
I am pretty sure most of us love to own some vintage black gilt dials and my question today is
How much more would you pay for, compare to a white dial?
Like the one with a white dial costs you $1000 then how much more would you pay for a black one? 1. 1/3 ? 1.50? 2?

Thank you for your answers.

Regards.
Hoi.

Personally I think a genuine black gilt dial adds around a 50% - 100% premium. I say that as someone who’s bought 4 in the last few months. if you’re only paying a 1.5x I think it’s a good deal, with closer to 2x being the norm.

As an example we’ve recently seen a lovely black gilt 166.010 sell instantly on OF for around $1500 or £1200. Similar silver dial versions have taken a couple of days/weeks at around $800-900 or £700.
The last two gilts dials I’ve sold I had people falling over themselves to buy it and even offering to pay more than the person who got there first of I agreed to sell to them instead.

One also has to consider reference, black dials being nearly impossible to find on some.

There seems to be a feeling on the MB that a lot of black dials have been re-finished! That would have to be taken into account as to re-sale value, I should think.

Original black dial is nearly impossible to find these day, I would be happy to pay double or triple the amount compare to white dial.

You got some black gilt dial for sale sir?

This. I generally agree with @Davidt’s assessment but some refs or particular dials are just so hard to find in black that I’d be happy to go way beyond that 1.5-2x price.

Two of my favorite examples:

A first-gen 2648 Connie. I’m well aware black dials are much easier to find on 2652s and onwards:

And a “golfball” 2577 Seamaster. Sorry Hoi, I know you don’t particularly like those 😁

Hi Matt 😁.

I love that dial, only hate the round logo haha.
________._.

Thanks for your answers guys. My next question is
Which one do you prefer? A black gilt dial or a black waffle dial?
Why?

Thanh you.

Paid about 2x not just for the black dial also the rose furniture

Others were more in the 1.2 - 1.5x range

Risk is they sometimes get “freckled”

Yeah black and rose gold is as good as it gets for me and I would be happy to pay double, if not more tbh.

I believe the price is even higher for the black “pinkgold”, when compared to the black “yellow gold”.😁

Got this back in 2014/15 (that was 10 years ago!!!)… indeed knew black dials were sought after and also didn’t see so many seamaster chronometers.
So was willing to pay a premium even though it is gold on steel. I believe I paid $650

I pay 3x-5x for black dial C-Case's and always reflect on how being a "collector" is so illogical

I think for regular models it should at least be 2x, but the problem is the target market and the shrinking middle class, when you increase prices, there isn't many people that are interested and has the budget

Being so inside the market, ourselves, it's also so hard to assess the rarity of items, it's very easy to lowball a future grail and get away with it, we're all living the dream
