Bit of a disaster...

I got a vintage bulova once that was literally dripping with oil when I opened it. I couldn't believe someone would do that. At least it was watch oil... I had to rinse the movement in Naphtha 3 times to get the oil out.
Naphtha ftw, now it keeps the best time out of all my vintage pieces!

After work, I often rinse myself with a little somethin'-somethin' from Napa. Sometimes more than 3 times.

Oh your poor throat, probably next time try Napa + Ultrasonic. Once would be enough 😜

How old is this watch? Is that wear simply a case of using/wearing it without lubrication? How long would it take to wear like that!
It is photos like this that really show me the importance of regular servicing!!!

Based on the series this watch was made in 2002. I have no information regarding when it was actually sold and started to be worn - sometime after that but how long I don't know. I also don't know if it was serviced since then, but my guess would be no.

I don't think the WD40 caused any of the wear, and was simply an attempt by someone to get the watch to run after it had stopped working. The damage to the balance tells me it was someone who had no clue poking around inside. Maybe the owner, but he has not confessed anything to me about how it got in this state.

People on other forums have accused me of recommending service so I get more business - odd since I have more work than I can possibly handle. But yes, these watches need to be serviced....I'm not making this up, eh. 😀

It might be a while - parts are on order but will take some time to get here, so for now this one is on hold.

This sounds like something a "redneck" would do...or maybe someone who thinks Red Green is God's Handyman....Al, you may not be able to tell us, but is this someone from this side of the ocean (North America, home of the worst rednecks!!) or the other?

I don't know much history of the watch, for example if the person I am dealing with is the original owner, who attempted to "fix" it, etc., but the current owner and who I am repairing it for is from Canada.

Hmm, the culprit maybe one of our illustrious "hockey" players who took too many hits!! Likely the same person who whacks his Ferrari F430 when it "doesn't sound right"...
