Between Speedmaster ’57 and Speedmaster Pro Which Would You Choose?

Trying to decide between the Speedmaster ’57 (manual wind) and the classic Speedmaster Professional.
For those who’ve owned or tried both which one felt more special on the wrist?
Is the ’57 worth the extra cost?

Would love to hear real-world opinions.

It’s up to you and what your prefer. When I was shopping a year ago, I considered both. I have a Seamaster 300 and like the broad arrow hands on it, so was considering the Speedmaster 57 to go with it. But I kept going back to the standard Speedmaster Pro with the hesalite and that is what I settled on. Primary reasons:

1) Chronograph dials/hands more legible in any light than the metal on the 57.
2) Don’t like the metal bezel on the 57.
3) The 57 lugs are just enough longer and the standard Speedmaster Pro fit my wrist better.

I was also cross-shopping the new First Omega in Space. That was a harder choice, but I still went with the Speedy Pro. I feel it fits my style better.

Good luck with your search.

It really is up to you. I would guess a majority of people would pick the Speedy Pro as their first speedy, but you may just be in love with the 57.

As a lover of blue dials (half my watches have blue dials) I think either is a fine choice, though the legibility, even after the lume is faded, of the normal Speedy, makes for not only a beautiful watch, but an incredibly practical choice as well.

I say get a vintage or neo vintage pro and then the ‘57 for something modern. With some patience you could probably buy both used in good condition for less than 1.25x the price of either modern reference you shared new at an OB.

I’m partial to the green dial ‘57, personally.

This is a personal choice of course. That said, I'm an absolute FAN/addict/etc of the Speedy Pro (I have 6, and none of the others).

I think the size, dimensions, shape, etc are all perfect, and everything Omega has done that changes that makes it 'worse'. Most of the color schemes of the Speedy Pro are fantastic however, and I'd take ANY one of those over one of the 'not-quite-pros'.

For example, I hate the reduced, I think the dimensions are wrong. I hate the 44 mm ones, even with the 861-derived movements. They just don't feel as 'elegant'. I dislike the 57 (or any of the 2 sub-dial ones). Same problems as the other two.

Say what you will about Omegas marketing (or my propensity to fall for it), but there is also a certain historical elegance to the pro.

I don't care for Broad Arrow or Alpha hands, nor the two hand chrono dial of the '57, nor steel bezels so that's an easy choice for me. But it's your watch, buy the one that puts a smile on your face.

There's no wrong answer here. But I went for an early 1970s Speedmaster Pro. It was just being the best tool watch that could be made at the time, while the '57 is very consciously being an Homage.

I've owned both. Today, the Pro remains in my collection.

The '57 is gorgeous and stylish, but IMHO it's more of a dressy watch, suitable for wearing with a suit, but not so much when wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Or just any casual wear. The Speedy Pro, in any one of its 734 variations, is much more flexible.

If I were still working and going into the office, I'd probably have kept the '57, but now that I'm retired I'm slimming down the collection, and it was the first to go.
