Just buy a new one and make your own stories with it. Some people like new ones, some don't. I think they are great.

This. A week after I posted in this thread I got a call from an AD that they had a 124060, which I had requested 7 months earlier. I sold my 16600 to help pay for the new Sub and I couldn't be happier.

I think the 14060M (improved movement) is the best of the vintage modern you can get. Personally it’s my favourite for the reasons you mentioned, but also because it’s the best proportioned (in my opinion next to the 124060) and wears the smallest height and lug to lug…. something to consider depending on your wrist size.

For value though, if your wrist wears it well, I’d recommend the modern 41mm 124060 (also because of the great bracelet).

If you are open to Tudor, there is the vintage Tudor Submariners 79090 and 79190 (sapphire, gold surround markers and uni-bezel are the key upgrades). Last of their breed, Rolex parts, and you can still get them at $4k - $6k depending on where you look.

Having had similar deliberations, I opted for two subs instead instead of one 14060M. Mine are of the same family, but smaller; Tudor Subs (36mm) 75090 black and 75190 blue (per my pic, there’s also a choice of steel bezel).

On hindsight, I should have got just one and saved the remainder towards a Vintage GMT.

The unpolished 75090 I just missed (picture from CoinWatchCo) and I’ve yet to take pics of mine,

My 75190 blue with steel bezel,

Another vote for 14060m, I recommend not to deal with substitutes ( yes, Tudor is a substitute). IMHO.

I like vintage Rolex very much but If you are looking for a GADA I think 124060 is the best option. I have one and It's really confortable
Pros:
AR coating
Clasp with micro adjustment
Power reserve
Narrow lugs (comparing with 114060)
Ceramic bezel
I like the proportion between the case and the 21 mm bracelet

New watches are definitely under appreciated, it will become more special and you will become more attached as time goes on!

An aficionado will purchase a submariner or a submariner date with ceramic bezel. By the way, the best option is an AD.

On the other hand, a watch for diving with ceramic bezel looks like less toolwatch, the replacement is expensive when it is broken by a rock, coral, table, etc but it's more useful in standard conditions of minor scratches. The sea salt and UV rays are not a problem.

I’m always going to be an advocate for spending a little more (prices are falling, after all) to get a nice 5513 - not mint, but nice.

I love mine and regularly wear it when I shouldn’t. And that’s easier to do because it isn’t perfect.

I am a five digit guy all the way. Modern Submariner is nice and I would certainly wear it, if I had it, but it’s not a watch I am actively pursuing in any way.

The first Rolex I bought was a 14060M and then some years ago I happened upon a birth year 16800. Both are still with me.
