Hi all, I picked up this benrus the other week. It was an eBay find. The watch is a running well and the dial is a little worse for wear but still pretty IMO.

it’s very similar to the Steve McQueen bullitt watch and I’m a big fan of the movie and the actor so for me it was a want.

$200 aud was the price I paid. Thoughts?
I gave it a good clean up, painted the red back on the second hand as the old was almost non existent and regulated it. It wasn’t that far off to be honest I just tweaked her a little. Here are the before photos.

I thought so, considering it’s condition I think it cleaned up well too.

does anyone know how to clean the triangle lume plots at the hr markers or I’ll just kill them if i try?

You will kill them. Only thing to do is send it to a professional for a relume. Not sure what that would cost (anyone reading used James Hyman) but it will probably exceed the value of the watch if that matters to you

I thought as much, I’m happy to leave it as is. The hands might need to be redone though as some of the lume fell onto the numbers and started to damage them. Number 2 and 3. Was lucky enough to clean 3 up good with rodico but 2 isn’t great. Want to leave them as long as possible though.

Benrus 3818B with 24 Hours dial as worn by NASA astronaut Robert Crippen in April 1975
Note: Many astronauts wore a military Bulova or Benrus wrist watch before being issued an Omega Speedmaster... just look at 1963, 1966 and 1969 NASA astronaut group announcement photographs 😗

Pretty cool stuff. The two models 3818b and my 3065 look very similar indeed and a cool bit of history as well. Thanks for that. Got some researching to do.

Variation on a theme

I saw one of these alarm versions in an article. I became aware of benrus through researching Steve McQueen watches. I’m a bit of a fan and love bullitt.
found out he wears a 3061 in it so I went looking. found the 3065 on an eBay auction. It was needing a clean up and some love. Got it serviced and gave it a freshen up myself.

I love how the civilian versions are so close to the military counterparts. Also I like that the 3065 is a front loader which only has 2 not 3 points of entry for water now.
