I need some road shoe recommendations. I've been out of it so long and there are some new brands and technology that have popped up as well.
Last time I bought shoes was probably 8 years ago! They only held up that long because I am not riding nearly as much as I used to.
In fact, I've been using them on the Peloton more than on the actual bike.
Anyway, I don't have a wide foot, so I can fit into something that runs a bit more narrow.
I've been wearing a Bontrager - I don't recall the model. What are you all using that you like and could recommend?
I actually bought some Adidas road shoes because Amazon had them for like, $100 but I've read they are trash. At least for the original price point of around $200. Those show up tomorrow....

Depends on your pedals. My modern bikes (FSVO) have double-sided SPDs because I have two bikes that are tricky to get moving (Holdsworth fixie and Ross recumbent) where I need to smash the shoe in without worrying about pedal orientation. . Some older bikes have period "rat-trap" pedals with toe-clips and leather straps, and because of them I need shoes that will not snag on bulky fastenings therefore I still use lace-up shoes. But my feet are rather wide so trying new shoes in the shop is essential. I've had a number of Shimanos that were OK but not very long lasting, and if I could find my winter shoes I'd tell you what make they are. I know they are not Shimano but I have given up riding in winter and can't find them.

Currently SPD-SL's for road and Peloton.

Like! But what clipless clips (sic!) can they fit?

Or are they nailed-on shoe-plate only?

That's a great option for when you have to ride in to the office for a meeting and don't want to bring an extra pair of shoes hah.

It took a while but Spring has finally sprung up in my neck of the woods so my new Friday evening routine is a quick cemetery ride while my son is doing his swimming lesson. The cemetery is next to my son’s swimming school and is massive. The roads are beautifully paved and it’s so quiet 😀

These are my riding shoes. One for road, one for gravel and one for mountain. Like you, my road shoes are almost ten years old and since I don’t do nearly as much road riding like I used to, they still get the job done and yes, those cleats are beaten up. They are Shimano with carbon soles with Look Keo cleats. For me, imo, carbon soles are a must for road shoes and recently, BOA lacing system too!

Nice cool saturday evening to ride one of my Peugeots. My little collection ranges between 1975 and 1983 and this is the youngest. The CFX10 was sold as a frameset and I built mine with Campagnolo Super Record, Cinelli and other Italian parts.

These are what I ended up with and took them for a spin on Saturday, which was also my first time out on the bike in months.
The shoes had very mixed reviews. Most people said for the price, you could get a better shoe - otherwise they were pretty good.
However I got them at half price ($100) so I figured I'd give them a shot since they did get some decent praise otherwise.

The BOA system is nice. And the shoes are very comfy, and despite not having a carbon sole, were still stiff enough for what I need them to do.
So overall I'm happy with them....

Short break from grant writing. This is the payoff after a painful 15 min uphill granny gear switchback. Absolute blast coming down.

Just chiming in with my own experience, I have always really liked Specialized for contact point stuff. Their Body Geometry line of shoes, saddles, and gloves in particular have been great for me in terms of fit and durability. Agree with the above on carbon soles for road shoes, def would not buy the old plastic soled ones after having ridden carbon.

Edit, gratuitous bike shot.

Those look good, almost like one of their knitted soccer cleats! I was looking for something similar before Adidas showed up on the scene again, and the closest thing were the DMT shoes for four times the price. They're extremely comfy in the summer, but the toes do end up freezing in the thick of winter, which really isn't anyone's fault but mine...

I've had them on the Peloton for a few rides and I've been enjoying them.
I would agree with the reviews that there are better shoes on the market for the price range, but for the price I paid, it's a great shoe.

After riding 2 weeks with a noisy chain, I finally realized that I installed the chain wrong through the drivetrain pulleys. Whoops.

Went thrift shop shopping in the weekend and found a brand new never fitted Specialized 400mm seat post and Body Geometry saddle plus a new gel seat cover, total cost $4.00, major score 😀

Today, I gifted my Brooks B17 saddle to another father who wanted it. I just couldn’t make it work.
Happy Father’s Day!
