Road riding scares me. I put all my eggs in the mountain basket.

Went with a Trek

Good move, nice bike, congrats. A few years back I did the same, looked at Specialized (as I’d started with a Rockhopper Comp many moons ago) but ended up with a Gary Fisher designed Trek as it had a mix of better components than the equivalent Specialized.

Such a huge amount of comparison sites and advice on the internet. Head was spinning with what was recommended as it was basically 50-50
Went with Trek for basically the service of the bike shop staff when visiting….living 3500km from a big city I had to rely on three bike shops in Darwin as no companies that sell online in Australia would ship without a $200+ fee.

Actually settled on a blue bike exactly the same but saw the colour above in the corner when I walked over to grab the bike I had just bought (as they had put it over the other side of the shop whilst I paid)
When I asked if I could swap to the other colour the lady looked at me confused.

She said she has never had anyone return a bike before it left the shop before.

Man, I’m jealous! I have been helping out with court maintenance during my lunch hour recently at my tennis club and I absolutely love it! My local Giant shop is hiring for both full time and part time work and I was really thinking about doing the tennis thing and the bike thing and quitting my full time job! That was until my wife said that our son is seven and has a long way to go which means we also have a long way to go until retirement….

I retired last year and started working as a part time mechanic at a local bike shop. An unexpected benefit has been the “junk” bikes left for scrap at the shop because people deem them unworthy of repair or don’t want to try to find compatible parts for their older drivelines.

so this past summer I acquired a free 1980ish Bottecchia road bike, heavily polluted with vintage Campagnolo bits and a Panasonic built 1977 Centurion Pro Tour, a really good quality touring bike.

both needed a bit of love and I’ve turned the Italian racer into a crazed city bike, but both ride like a dream and draw a lot of comments. Especially the Centurion with all that lovely alloy!

My wife had a hip operation back in the spring which has left her a bit unsure on her feet and quite nervous of bicycles.

here’s the solution we came up with...

We tried it out this morning... a cool if slightly weird ride..

Nice cool evening to ride.

Having already gotten in a longer road-bike training ride, I went with the TopFuel over driving the gas-guzzler for dinner and beer(s) at my favorite nearby watering hole…

Perhaps tomorrow I can get out to some technical off-road trails for which this bike is meant to be ridden!

Not sure where you live or where you were seated, but that cable lock is only going to keep honest people honest. Great-looking bike, hope you get it out on the trails soon

Yea the place I live has bike storage thieves keep getting to any anything that isn’t a D lock that’s thick and heavy as hell is going to leave you walking home.

You guys are right.

I know it would just take a simple cable cutter. I was sitting inside just a few feet away at a restaurant where at least half a dozen of the staff there know me and my bike, but I don’t need to be inviting a walk-by vagrant!

honestly, if I asked the owners, they would probably let me just roll it inside, but the better option would be a D-lock…

A rough day... took Frau Fritz out for a run on the tandem in the morning. Then a nice ride after lunch on the Dutch bike, and finally a blast on the Italian rat bike before dinner.

Can’t you just smell that “eau d’campagnolo”
