Well I'm a sad old guy of 68 whose bones are starting to creak and the hills seem to get steeper. Today the Swytch bike electrification kit I ordered on the 30th of March finally arrived. Fitted it this evening and a test drive up and down the drive in the dark shows it's working. So tomorrow I'll have a go and see how much it helps. Watch this space I'll report back.

I was going to buy a watch but I got distracted by this beautiful pink thing.

Nice!

Days are getting shorter and you can feel the fall coolness at night. Mtb & gravel combo ride today to take advantage of whatever is left of summer 🙁

The weather went SoCal style again, hot the last couple of days 90+ and when you are out there for hours you feel it. But soon it will turn.

So I took the Swytched bike for a shake down ride the next day. Behaved perfectly. I went out with a friend with a purpose made electric bike. We did 30 Kms with a height rise of 300M. On hills it felt a bit like being on an exercise bike in the gym set to medium. Completed the ride with 40% battery power left. I'm sure with this I will ride further and get more exercise on the bike as it makes things more manageable. It also had me travelling in a direction I wouldn't have gone before because of some steep hills. I'm not a dedicated mamil (Middle aged men in Lycra) who hunt in macho packs. Cycling is just one of several things I do.

The kit is in 4 parts a powered front wheel hub. A battery pack with control centre. A bracket and cable assembly allowing the pack to be easily removed from the bike. A magnetic ring attached to the pedal crank with a sensor attached to the frame that senses you pedalling and supplies proportinate power. It looks pretty much like it is part of the bikes standard kit.
So I'm pleased despite my 5 month and 20 day wait. Cost for the kit with Pro battery pack plus extra for a black wheel was £600. Best of all it still feels like my bike but easier to ride. Comes with 12 months warranty with UK based support by email and zoom.

Got out for the first time in probably 6 months. At least that’s what it feels like.

Sounds miserable. But looks great! lol.
It’s pretty tough, specially if you are self supported. But is hard to find support like that, it was my first time carrying 40+ lbs everything is different on the bike. But is prep for future races.

Nicely done! My buddies and I are planning to do a 500 mile self supported ride next summer similar to the one you just. Don't think it will be nearly the amount of climbing as you but from what I can tell, it will be more of the single track/gravel type of ride. Just need to decide if it will be on the mountain or gravel bike!

With that kind of miles, you really need to test out everything, from the gearing to what exactly to bring even bike styoe. Some “cheap “ racks might work ok on fire road or road, but will get destroyed in some aggressive off-road. Carrying just 20-30lbs changes everything, after 6-8hrs everything matters. Personal grooming, in particular the butt is important, I only use assos cream for 4hr + days and reapply.

Absolutely. Been getting a lot of feed back from those that have done this particular challenge and it's a 50/50 split between the mountain/gravel bike. Think the benefit here is that there are tons of little towns a long the route and the plan is for us to stay at a B&B or something similar every night. This will save us from packing sleeping gear. Having been riding for more than 30 years along with multiple 24 hr & 8 hr solo mtb races, think my old ass body should be able to make it!

Haha old ass, going that route would definitely be more forgiving. I’m training for the cape epic, so the game face is on. Yours sounds like an awesome trip. We might do the Baja Divide this December. Have fun

Yeah that one took me 5 years to get in, and the covid screwed everything up. If you want to go next year, I can assist you.

Thanks for the offer but it will probably be within the next 5 years or so that I will hopefully get the opportunity to do this race. I will definitely seek out your advice should I do end up doing it.

Abandoned cars make for wonderful trail accessories.

A beautiful sunny 70° day, so I loaded up and went out to the lake to ride, but I really meant to leave new Speedie Calibre 321 in the safe… Makes no sense putting a rare and fine piece at risk in case the watch meets road!

Watch did meet road about five years ago, but it was just a very good-looking (before the fall) quartz beater!

Well, I was already headed down the road before I realized I was wearing new Speedie!

Lake Overholser, Oklahoma, City

I got away with one!
