Put together yet an old bike. A Conti Designer '84 from about 1985-6. I bought it new as a bare frame and used it hard for some years back then. Then an early retirement and it got stripped of all its parts. Has been lingering in the back of my hobby workshop since. Until now - when I built it up again - with most of a 1987-8 Campagnolo Chorus group + Record hubs, headset and C-record pedals. Selle Italia Campionissimo saddle.

Once again, very envious of all the clean metal.

Given the state of the trails here I have even given some thought to a road orientated bicycle, although I was pretty drunk at the time. Not sure I can go through with it though, 2020 was rough so not sure 2021 should be the year everyone gets to to see me in lycra.

Ok, now I'm in the deep end; full suspension! I added the camo frame protection as a theme, I think it works. #NBD

Yup! Steeper learning curve for sure. Riding HT first is definitely instilling better habits, but I have a long way to go.

A climbing day, up to 7000 and 8500 feet of climbing got really cold at the end. First time doing the ride, been there before to visit the observatory.

Question about loading a rack like that. Just picked up a Kuat rack and will be using it this weekend for the first time. Do you generally load a single bike to the furthest mount?

I usually load it to the furthest rack, for extra protection, there I was only going a few miles from the hotel. That rack was hit by a truck a couple of years back, had to replace the hitch rail. Probably kept car from getting totaled.

I see. I’ll keep it closer to the truck for this drive as it’ll be on the rack for about 4-5 hours. Great climbing, by the way.

Spring is here! Spring is here! A balmy 14 degrees celsius and nothing but sunshine for the ride today.

The gravel roads took a beating over the winter so got some new bar tape and more grippy tires for the challenge 👍

Any of you all have tips on teaching kids how to ride?
We bought a balance bike a little over a year ago for the (then) 2 year old and she has never had much interest in it. But I also have not wanted to push/force her to try it if she really didn't want to.
For her 3rd birthday (yesterday) she wanted a "normal" bike, so of course, I obliged.
She just doesn't get it lol. I swear, that little girl is almost smarter than I am but she is the most clumsy, un-athletic tiny person lol.
Not that she doesn't try. She is in dance class and soccer currently, but jeez. Anyway...
The bike is a 12" w/ training wheels so I sit her down and she just does not understand the pedaling motion.
So I put the training wheels on some 2x4 which elevates the rear wheel basically making her a little trainer.
I hold her feet on the pedals and push her feet down so she understands the mechanics behind it, but the second I try to have her do it on her own she just won't/can't! I've moved the seat up and down and it seems to have no effect.
So yeah, any tips? Lol.

@vbrad26 Don’t have any helpful tips, but she is absolutely adorable. Hopefully someone here will chime in with useful advice.

Forgot to post pics from our Big Sur trip last weekend. A mudslide has taken out a piece of the PCH which means the we had a virtually empty road to ride (save for the few construction trucks coming to and from the work site).

Oh man, good luck! I had the exact same problem with my son last year too. He kept on trying to pedal backwards which was basically applying the breaks on his bike. He would get frustrated and kept on asking why he wasn't moving! No mattered what my wife and I did, he just couldn't wrap his head around pedaling forward....We threw in the towel, sent him off to biking school and now he rides like a champ. He can even do some tricks now too!

Hah biking school. Didn't realize that was a thing. May have to look into it.
I didn't expect her to just get right on and go, I realized there would probably be some work involved.
But yeah same issue here, she may get one rotation but then starts cranking backwards which then applies the brakes and she looses whatever momentum she had... I'll try for a few more weekends and see how it goes.

Yes. Get rid of the stabiliser wheels and bin them forever. Take her with both the balance and ‘proper’ bike to a gentle grassy slope where you don’t have to brake to slow at the bottom. Send her down it on the balancer first, feet out and off the floor. Then do the same on the regular bike, only this time tell her to stick her feet on the pedals and grind away when the speed drops. Half a dozen goes and she’ll be away! Good luck

I guess I've been lucky. My 3 yo granddaughter has got the concept of pedaling. The only problem is making her consistent. Her mind is easily distracted. The other thing I have discovered with a pedal bike is. she's forgotten how to steer. Plus stopping was always a problem with the coaster. Three times out and she keeps improving. So I guess the only hope is that pedaling, steering and stopping will all be learned before the summer. 😀

First and fairly cold (5 degrees celsius) mountain bike ride of the season. Felt so nice being back on the mountain bike 😀
