Story of being careful

Was shown this yesterday

This was brought in by a customer to a friend who works at a AD he said he was pretty please with himself as he had been waiting for one for ages. Swopped it for £8,000 worth of gold

They are Rolex accredited service center and Ill let you imagine how the guy felt when he left and he didn't take the watch with him
Who identifies this as a fake by just looking at the outside of the watch?

This is why is stay always from vintage Rolex and if I were going to buy one, it would be from an AD who deals in vintage (like my local who takes trade pieces), or a seller/dealer here who everyone knows. If I saw thay Daytona in a pawn shop, popped the back cover and saw that movement, I would think it was legit becuase I don’t know these watches... and I’m a watch guy and own 3 Rolex’s! It is indeed scary out there.

For education purposes in this thread-can someone please point out the tell-tales on that daytona so the uneducated of us can learn?

One thing I noticed is how bad a lot of the screws look like! But that can happen on a real one as well (but shouldn't).
The other thing is the regulator thingy on the balance bridge, the real one is free-sprung, isn't it?

Aren't the synthetic rubies fake? No post going through them.

And I know *nothing* about Rorax.

Well, I just read this thread, and it the OP was disappointingly content-free. Not very helpful. Just "watch out", but no indication of what to be careful of. 🙄

This thread does beg the question: when buying a "pre-owned" watch online, how can you rely be sure the item is genuine? Sure, if you buy through ebay, they will supposedly guarantee its authenticity, but wouldn't you have to take it to a watchmaker/jeweler to make sure?
All of this is supposing that those fakes out there really are that good.

Just put in your 10,000 hours become an expert. 😉

I invested those hours in Invicta, was it a good investment?

Yes the bridge and the printing on the movement looking closely you could tell it wasn’t quite right I thought it was legit till he pointed out what the watch repairer showed him

This goes into a teardown of a fake 4130, and was pretty informative. I think to me the first clue is just how rough the movement looks.
