Bad Day On The Dark Side Of The Moon

A week or so after I bought mine and as I was strolling down the pavement minding my own business, the back door of a car flew open and crashed straight onto my watch and hand. Apart from the fact I was furious (and hurt), my thought immediately went to the watch. When I checked, it had what seemed like white scratches at various places and ignoring the cringing apology from the lady who had opened the door, I frantically brushed at the white on the watch - and it all came away. It was the paint from the car door and after taking it to the AD for checking, it was confirmed as being undamaged! Huge relief....and pride in the watch. Then I see this thread! 🙁

When I expressed my concerns over this I was told I was being paranoid, or that Omega had some super ceramic that would not break like the Panerai's do. Well, now we know...

I don't have any more information unfortunately. Here is a screen shot from Tumblr; it was off a feed I follow which posts watch pics from all over.

Found this DSOTM online. Allegedly dropped on its lug. $9k worth of damage, not covered by warranty. Thought it was worth sharing. My deepest sympathies go out to the owner
That is so sad to me. I really would expect more of this timepiece.

Wow, this watch is like a toy compared with the original Speedmaster pre-pro and professional. Only a product of marketing.

This is truly awful, seems cheap for $9,000. I don't have the watch but like 45 million others I have the album (still) . . . . "Time" and "Money" come to mind . . . . . . "Great Gig in the Sky" I guess

We can all speculate on how the watch got broken but I'm interested to know the swear words ratio when the guy actually broke it.
( if it was my watch there would be a few new swear words for general consumption)

I wondered. Luckily it's out of my price range.

I knew this guy who had parked his BMW on the street, and as he was getting out of the car someone sideswiped him and took his left arm right off. Well, he's standing there, cursing about the damage to his BMW, and one of the bystanders who had seen the whole thing says to him "Hey, man, you're all worried about your car? What about your arm? Your whole arm is gone". At that point the guy looks down, realizes his arm is gone, and exclaims "MY ROLEX!!!!!"

That's BS, I heard it was really just an Invicta. 😒

really?

I don't buy it. Probably a photoshopped job as good as some of those shown around here! 😁 prove me wrong!

I don't doubt it, but as a result of your post, I did check the photo of the broken watch against mine. And I know we'll never know, but that lug must have hit the floor just so for a direct hit on the lug, if that's what happened, as it's actually pretty well protected by the strap and the stopper. It's actually hard to work out how the drop would cause such damage? This, I should add, is purely a comment from a layman with no idea of the physics (is that even the right word?) behind the make up of the ceramic and the pressures exerted upon impact (probably getting above myself there).

Never know what actually happened, but this would have to have been a very, very unlucky hit from quite high up. It's like when people I know drop their iPhones and they land "just so" and the entire screen shatters. 😜

Okay...I sent this photo to a contact at Omega, and they confirmed they have seen one with the same damage - lug snapped off. I very much doubt this is a photoshop job...

I would be really surprised if Omega refused to replace the case, I would have thought if the owner pushed it hard enough Omega wold honour a replacement case, maybe not but surely worth a try, I love the DSOTM but this is why I would never but one

I'm sure they would replace the case as well, however I suspect the owner will have to pay for it.

If the watch was dropped (unknown, but I suspect that is the situation) then why would Omega cover this? They certainly don't cover damage if you drop a steel watch, so why would they with one that is even more ;likely to suffer major case damage? This expectation makes no sense to me.

Cheers, Al

Omega makes no warranty regarding the durability of the ceramic, so to expect that they'd replace it for free probably misses the mark. I've actually seen the ceramic scratched, too. It's not adamantium...
