·M90 eh?
dang that’s a rare bird, I’d always wanted to do an S50 or even go all out with an S54 for the ultimate BMW inline 6 coupe.
I currently DD the e9’s spiritual child with an s54.
is yours a true CSL? If so didn’t those have wierd sheet metal to begin with?
No, it’s not a true CSL. It is a US delivery CS to which I added a bunch of “Liecht”.
And I imagine the thinner gauge steel on the true CSL’s may have the same weirdness to the alloy.
I have an M88/3 that was going to go into it back 20 odd years ago. The S50 would have been wild, but either of these motor choices would not provide quite the period vibe I was looking for at the time. At that time M90’s were relatively available at a price I could afford-as were CR dogleg gearboxes. This motor has a trick CNC ported head and big ole domed pistons that were available at that time. And I had always wanted to learn how to tune Webers, which is quite a rabbit hole - in and of itself. This motor dynoed at 280 pounds feet and 298 hp at 6200 on a 300 degree cam while running on Sunoco 110 octane. A bigger cam would bump the power up even more at a higher RPM peak, but at the expense of street driveability.
all this stuff is a slippery slope as you all know. And I needed to figure out where I could effectively play on that slope. I’m happy with it as it is and this car deliverers big grins to me every time I run it.
