Mulling over a number of lower cost mechanicals, with an eye toward to automatics. Not really a beater or even a true daily wear but an appropriate for office and occasional night I need to dress up. Probably on my wrist two days a week. Right now looking at: Seiko's low end mechanical divers mainly because it's a different direction from the watches I own. Tissot has some nice entry level automatics. Of course have to mention the Seiko Cocktail time SARB065. Any other brands or specific watches to take a look at? My uncle in Washington DC is going to give me back some of my money in a couple months.
Not sure the price range you're interested in, but my daily wearer and automatic is a simple Seamaster. Some days it is classy on black leather and others it finds its way onto a nato.
Forgot to mention that with a full service + purchase it came to about $600. That's not too far over the price point of the above watches.
Orient Bambino... It comes in 3 versions with 3 or 4 dial layouts and 4 colors as well as gold plated versions. Basically they are the dress version of the Seiko SKX, sub $200 and built very well. They are a bit larger then a traditional dress watch but nowhere near oversized. They run 21mm straps which still gives a fair bit of options on straps. This is a V2 grey dial, fairly hard to source but the importer has them in stock, side note the grey is super hard to photograph, and really needs AR coating the black dials are very classy. V1 has a large crown and I am not sure the difference between v2 and v3 except for dial options. Mine is on a new strap and next to an skx so you can see the size differential.
For a new watch, I agree Seiko Cocktail time or my favorite 6r15 movement watch, the Blue Spark. Or maybe a Stowa Antea KS. For vintage, you could get a nice Seamaster as mentioned above, or Longines, or any number of dressy watches.
I already have an early 50's gold capped Seamaster, but do like that day date in steel. I've looked at that Seiko with a different bezel, but haven't had a chance to get one on wrist thanks for the photo. The Orient is intriguing will gander more at that. Got a few more weeks to shop. Thanks for the ideas!
Tried on two Khaki's today when I dropped off my junker Timex to see if it can be raised from the dead. Excellent recommendation @Garv Shop had a really large collection of Seikos but pretty much all quartz/solar/kinetic other than a couple of the cheaper diver automatics. Straight out offering 25% off list price Selling Bulova's cheap 40% to 55% off depending on model. They are closing out and ending their Bulova affiliation but nothing struck my fancy.
Swatch Sistem51. Date complication, 90-hr power reserve. $US 150.00 MSRP, about $US 110 from online discounters.
Looks much like the Hamilton Khaki Seiko has sooooo many watches across such wide array of price points I don't know how people keep up.
After TWICE pulling up a SARB065 on Amazon and not being able to make myself hit the "buy it now" button, I bought a Connie that @CanberraOmega was selling. Plan on picking up a Seiko 5 as a beater. https://omegaforums.net/threads/constellation-c-shape-rose-gold-cap-cut-to-700.34206/
I was looking at the SARB065 last night as a matter of fact. After all, I do have an empty spot in the watch box and that means I have to add something. Right?
The Cocktail is so nice looking. Buy the one I backed out of it, doesn't need to have hurt feelings, it wasn't the watch it was me. I'm sticking with the empty box theory for the time being but I've only got one more empty spot not spoken for. Going to need a bigger box.
Hey now, that's my joke.
