Authentic Moonwatch? Help!

I’m trying to buy a wedding gift for my fiancé in the form of a vintage Speedmaster Moonwatch as we both love space etc etc etc ... but I know NOTHING about watches, whatsoever. Neither Omega nor any other brand.

I came across this one on eBay and thought it looked cool but obviously (1) missing a photo of the back, (2) weirdly has a booklet from 2011 despite being a 2017 Omega archive purchase of a 1976 watch and (3) not a ton of detail on what exactly the original band is that the seller has removed.

That said, if I could resolve these issues I still don’t know if this is legit. I did research the bezel and it looks like it could be an genuine DNN version that would have been around in 1976 but that’s based really on one online resource.

I’m sorry if I’m not posting this properly but would be very appreciative of guidance!

At first blush, this looks like a nice example of a full kit 1976 Speedmaster Professional 145.022-74 ST. The box and papers look correct and the extract from the archives is helpful. An 861 movement and an 1171 bracelet and 633 end links would also be correct for this reference. All of that being said, there are not enough high resolution photos of the watch from all angles to properly evaluate its condition and the lack of a movement photo as well as a case back photo is troubling. As the watch is currently bid up to $4,601 with more than three hours to go before the auction expires, my guess is that the final price is going to be too high for this example even if it’s completely genuine. Personally, I would not purchase it without better photos including photos of the case back and movement.

As noted above, the price will go higher. And it will need a service for use so allow another $500-1000 for that. That seems a lot to spend based on a few pictures with some important information missing.

Is 1976 important for you? It just has quite a few unknowns and you could end up spending many thousands for a watch that won't turn out to be exactly what you want. It's a lovely thought to buy such a watch, though these vintage watches can be a minefield. You'd normally want to do a lot of research and choose something that is sold with a warranty as you're not a watch person.

I assume you're not interested in a new Speedmaster? This could be bought to tie in with your engagement or wedding and will be special because of that. At least you know it will all be correct and come with a five (?) year warranty.

Good luck, Chris
