Auatavia Caliber 02 after a month

Being new to the hobby (and being somewhat of a realist,) I haven’t gone crazy buying watches. I’ve made my share of Noob mistakes, fortunately only one was very costly. I have tried divers, dress, and tank watches but have come to the realization that chronographs are what I really like.

My latest acquisition is a Heritage Autavia Calibre 02 automatic. I picked it up in a trade for a Seamaster 300MC at my local shop. Man, that SM was an anchor of a watch, and fat!

My impressions of the Heuer after about a month of daily wear are positive. The Jochen Rindt connection is cool, as racing and cars are passions. Andretti wore one too, along with other racing luminaries.

The new inhouse 02 movement is beautifully finished, though the black (carbon fiber?) rotor isn't very attractive. The watch winds constantly with the slightest movement so the rotor becomes a blur at most.

It is beautifully made. The creamy lume doesn’t come across screaming “Fake!” In fact, it complements the highly polished applied indices and hands.

The watch came with a camel patinated leather Autavia strap. It started showing wear almost immediately, so I changed it for a generic oiled leather band.

The pushers are smooth and solid, though starting the chronographer takes a bit more push than resetting it. The 60 clicks of the bezel feel like butter. When I purchased the watch I thought the bezel was ceramic. It is aluminum, kind of a letdown. But I’m careful with my watches and the aluminum bezel on my Moon Watch is now four years old and it still looks new. Hopefully I have the same good fortune with this Autavia.

The watch keeps amazing time, so far it is accurate to the minute after a month. I'm going to let a few pieces go and just keep a three watch collection of chronographs (the other two are a Moon Watch and an IWC Portugueser.) The Jochen will fit in perfectly.

Awesome - that’s a great watch. I’m a chronograph person too (I too only found out late on).

I have the Heuer 02 mvmt in my green Monaco. It’s a good movement, but do you find the rotor quite noisy? It’s a common complaint over at calibre 11.

Great review! Also heard a few complaints over thickness. What are your thoughts?

Wonderful piece. Christian Horner wore that for at least 2 F1 seasons, but I think he stopped last year.

always loved it, and it’s been on my short list for awhile.

Great review. Really like the looks of the watch. I've been looking at the new Tudor BB Chrono, but will have to give the Autavia a hard look before I make a decision.

Yes, the rotor is strange. But, with normal ambient noise I can't ear it. Only when I sit down in a quiet living room and give it a twist do I hear it. I like the sound. It sounds like precision and quality, and then to see the rotor spinning like crazy I like it even more!

It is a big watch, but wears smaller than my SM300 Chrono on bracelet. The only thing I've noticed so far is that when seated at a desk I can feel (and hear) the top of the watch (12:00) sliding against the desk. I've checked and there are no scratches yet.

Coming from such an enthusiast as you means a lot. Thanks.

I, too, tried the Tudor BBC. It was a wonderful piece. But, prices are rising and I didn't feel a personal connection to it. If you do, buy it! Life is short. Buy what you like.

It's an amazing looking watch. Both the panda and reverse panda versions. I like how the date at 6 was cleverly and discretely blended into the bottom subdial. I was just about to pull the trigger on one until I noticed the unexplainable bottom subdial in 15 seconds-divisions sub divided in 4??? Sorry but that is unforgivable in a chronograph of this price.

EDIT: I was referring to the running seconds subdial. Not the minutes counter.

Not sure I understand your reply but it's simply my personal opinion. The most important part is for you to love the watch.

The early ones had the strange markings on the running seconds, but that was fixed pretty quickly. If you look at most of the new Autavias available today, they're properly marked.

Well....that rekindled my interest in this chrono!

Well if that did it, then this'll catch your attention: FMV for these Autavias is hovering around $3k US - they're presenting a really nice value prop at that price point IMO. I never really liked it but even I look at them at that range...

Do you have a photo? I’m curious. Thanks.

That price is correct. My clunky 300m chronograph was “worth” exactly what this watch was priced at. Then the dealer (I like him, and he gave me a $400 discount) I think I’m fine with it. Plus or minus on this watch doesn’t ruin my enjoyment of wearing it. Again. All month.
