High Hope
·Being new to the hobby (and being somewhat of a realist,) I haven’t gone crazy buying watches. I’ve made my share of Noob mistakes, fortunately only one was very costly. I have tried divers, dress, and tank watches but have come to the realization that chronographs are what I really like.
My latest acquisition is a Heritage Autavia Calibre 02 automatic. I picked it up in a trade for a Seamaster 300MC at my local shop. Man, that SM was an anchor of a watch, and fat!
My impressions of the Heuer after about a month of daily wear are positive. The Jochen Rindt connection is cool, as racing and cars are passions. Andretti wore one too, along with other racing luminaries.
The new inhouse 02 movement is beautifully finished, though the black (carbon fiber?) rotor isn't very attractive. The watch winds constantly with the slightest movement so the rotor becomes a blur at most.
It is beautifully made. The creamy lume doesn’t come across screaming “Fake!” In fact, it complements the highly polished applied indices and hands.
The watch came with a camel patinated leather Autavia strap. It started showing wear almost immediately, so I changed it for a generic oiled leather band.
The pushers are smooth and solid, though starting the chronographer takes a bit more push than resetting it. The 60 clicks of the bezel feel like butter. When I purchased the watch I thought the bezel was ceramic. It is aluminum, kind of a letdown. But I’m careful with my watches and the aluminum bezel on my Moon Watch is now four years old and it still looks new. Hopefully I have the same good fortune with this Autavia.
The watch keeps amazing time, so far it is accurate to the minute after a month. I'm going to let a few pieces go and just keep a three watch collection of chronographs (the other two are a Moon Watch and an IWC Portugueser.) The Jochen will fit in perfectly.
