Asymmetric 861 Speedmaster cases; all the same case profile?

Hi all,

Recently had a chance to put a few of my 80s and 90s Speedmasters next to each other and to answer the question in the topic title; nope. They clearly aren't all the same. Even though MWO only highlights the CB as having a very different case profile, there is a lot more variation.

A few pictures highlighting the differences follow.

From left to right:
3570.50 (approximately 1996); 3590.50 (early 90s) and 145.022-78 (approximately 1980).

On to the side profile shots:

From top to bottom:
3570.50 (approximately 1996); 3590.50 (early 90s) and 145.022-78 (approximately 1980).

And a guest appearance of the Rising Sun added to it:

(Yes, confusingly with the Rising Sun at the bottom of the stack)

So, if you find yourself in the usual discussing convincing your significant other that you need another Speedmaster; here's another argument. 😁

And then there's 70's/60's 861s ... also quite different 😉

Yup. Plenty! I might make an addition to this thread with some 145.022-68s and a 145.022-69 when I’ve collected those from the safe.

There are many variations of the Speedmaster case profile, and you are right. Moonwatch only is extremely lacking when it comes to this (very important) subject.
Keep an eye out for a post from me coming soon... 😉

The more knowledge shared, the better. Looking forward to that! 😉

Really interesting topic, I've always found some references more attractive than others.

I would be glad to see some additional information on this.

Can these case types be tied to the casemaker on the inside of the caseback?

I think even within the same timeframe (ex. Early 90s) there are different case profiles. My 3590.50 from the early 90s has a “ADB” case with the fir tree logo.

Interesting topic.

Interesting comparison of later 861 cases that dovetails nicely with an earlier thread highlighting the differences between pre-moon cases. Here are the photos from that thread for reference:

I can't speak to all the references, but I've seen various 145.022-69's that appear to have varying, albeit small, differences in case lines. Specifically, the the amount of brushed vs polished area seems to vary slightly. I'm not sure if this can be attributed to manufacturing tolerances or perhaps it just came down to the individual at the case manufacturer completing the case polishing that day (to be honest I'm not sure how the cases were finished/polished). These are cases with sharp edges...no soft/round areas like you'd expect with a third party polish. But a lot can happen over 50+ years so who knows if this is in fact how they left the factory.

Has anyone else noticed this?
