Aussies off to a great start…. 😉

Question. Is there anyone in county cricket that can bat or bowl and just not getting a go ?
Seems strange there is no depth, or is it just lockdown for so long there wasn’t much playing cricket this year……
Thought there may be one or two young up and coming players.
Chris Dent, scores runs for fun at Gloucestershire but he won’t get the call-up because he plays for Gloucestershire.

England’s batting problems have been clear for a few years. Ever rotating openers, frequent collapses or wickets falling in clusters. It’s simply magnified in Aus with the wickets they’re playing on and pace of the ball which they aren’t used to facing in the UK.

Still no excuse, for another one sided series down under. I keep saying I want to take the family to Aud for Christmas one year to go to the Boxing Day test. Can’t see me bothering any time soon.

Cricket in England is no longer a major sport amongst the young.our village in Yorkshire has existed for over 150 years and yet a few years ago it almost folded due to lack of young lads joining the club.it was only the recruitment of players from the nearby Asian community that kept it going.with the recent controversies surrounding racism at Yorkshire CC where is the irony in that.

One problem is the ‘central contracts’ - these mean contracted England players rarely get to play for their counties to potentially play themselves into form if / when required. Combine this with the fact that England teams no longer play practice / tour matches with a number of local state teams when touring like they used to. This means that they have little practical experience of local conditions, which are quite different from what they are used to in England. On top of this are the schedules across different forms of the game (and don’t even mention The Hundred) - there are some good, younger players (Jofra Archer for example) that have become injured due to being overused across different formats.

I do worry for the future of Test cricket. Outside The Ashes and, I imagine, matches involving India, the 5-day format seems to be losing its status as the pinnacle of the game. As discussed above, players are being asked (and paid more) to play in shorter formats. I can see a situation where, in say 5-10 years, it’s all but dead.

Like many sports, there’s just too much sport. Players are knackered. Money talks. And sport suffers from being merely viewed as lucrative entertainment.

That aside. Is this the worst England team we have sent to Oz? The stats are damning…

Taking nothing away from a very impressive and utterly ruthless Aussie side. Great to watch. But chastening from an england pov.

I was looking at a table showing the averages of England batsmen since c.2010.

It’s frightening to see how good the side used to be c.2009-12 with players from that time dominating the top 10, and Root aside, there’s very few anywhere near from this current crop.

Majority of 5 day tests are boring as hell. There are the exceptions however (I remember those games in the early 2000's where record scores for the format were made and broken in a single game).

Perhaps they will shake things up a bit and change the format to somehow incorporate 5xT20's or as a 'new' 5 day format where everyone is urged to chase after everything on both sides...

Even though he had a British passport and was playing for England, I'm fairly certain KP was not British 😀

Tests are alive and well in Australia. The fact that we have a whole Big-Bash league whilst tests are playing there is something for everyone.

We did go through the tests aren’t popular a few years ago but nowadays they are as popular as ever. 70,000 on day one of this test shows (it was capped at just over 70k I think) Having a real summer helps 😉

In Darwin’s dry season (the south’s winter) we have a lot of young players come up for all year round playing and the comp is very strong.

Allowing Australia to win the Test Series is part of the marvellous trade deal the UK recently agreed with them.

Oh FFS.
68 all out

on the upside, a lie-in tomorrow. i won’t miss that sudden, futile dart of hope that accompanies waking up … only to be cruelly snuffed out within seconds of a browser window opening onto a scene of devastation. At least the England lads have had the decency to bet it over with before I even got to sleep this time.

Congrats to Australia. 5-0 is looking very much do-able.

How do you put this into context? Scott Boland has just finished with figures of 6-7 from four overs on debut.

I would say that he had quite a successful debut!

Wow…are Australia really this good, or are England really this bad. The answer is clear…yes!

So, moving forward, can’t wait for the next Ashes series in England (where Australia haven’t won in 20 years)...😉
