Can England declare now and come home for Christmas?
To honest - why would they want to?

I always think that picking a National side is a bit random. Not everyone (probably not even the selectors) would agree on the squad.

When all’s said and done, international cricket is just a series of ‘friendly’ matches - even with the Aussies. It’s not really a matter of life or death.

What’s really important is how one’s real team gets on in the County Championship or, if you’re Australian, the Sheffield Shield.

As a Lancashire supporter, I’m far more interested (and anxious) about how they do.

(And just to make it clear, these fixed over day games- whether they’re 60 overs, 40 overs or 100 balls (I ask you 😕) might be a pleasant diversion but have no real relevance!

(Nuff said. Nice to get that off my chest 😉)

Looks like the UK folks have woken up for the tail to be bowled out. 👍

Can someone in Australia with a kind heart please deport those people masquerading as the English Cricket Team, they have clearly falsified their entry documentation into Australia and should be removed from the country post haste.

😀

Glad that’s over.

Can’t believe Joe Root mentioned he was proud of the team for their last days performance and they just need to do it for the whole five days. They scored stuff all and stood on stumps 😗

Root is shell-shocked, he knows he’s facing a 5-0 Ashes defeat but he’s got no option but to try and keep his side motivated. He needs to be less harsh on himself, it might define his captaincy but there’s nobody else in the team that’s anywhere near his level with the bat and certainly nobody else who’s ready to captain them. Double-edged sword.

You're right, but I do wonder whether we have fallen into the age old trap of having names in the team rather than those playing the best cricket in the positions we need to fill.

Ben Stokes would be a good example, he has had some personal issues and probably could do with a bit of time away from the spotlight and get his confidence back via the county game, he certainly isn't the player he was. Jimmy Anderson, a superb cricketer but at nearly 40 is past his best but we bring him along instead of blooding new bowlers.

The selectors have players on this 'central contract' or something like that and to me it just gives a contracted player the opportunity to be lazy and not at their best, players need to be hungry for the opportunity to represent their country, not sure that everyone in the England Cricket Team is hungry enough for this ashes battle.

But we will see, with luck Joe Root and his merry band of cricketers have been lulling the Aussies into a false sense of security and are about to unleash a 3 test thrashing and take the ashes back home where they belong.

Ha.

Seems to me the biggest problem is entirely of our own making - we’ve ploughed all our efforts and resources into developing the one-day squads for years at the expense of the Test side. Jonny Bairstow is a prime example of this very thing.

I always found it funny we have "World Championships" in Baseball and Basketball that include 2 countries.
And Hockey, 2 countries. But the best is US Football, with all the teams from just 1country. Now that’s a real “world champion” LOL. ::facepalm1::

Always loved cricket and I have many books on the subject ( Wisden, Remarkable cricket grounds, etc... )
And then... it stopped raining...

Aussies off to a great start…. 😉

Question. Is there anyone in county cricket that can bat or bowl and just not getting a go ?
Seems strange there is no depth, or is it just lockdown for so long there wasn’t much playing cricket this year……
Thought there may be one or two young up and coming players.

It’s that issue about form being transient and class permanent, so our selectors have a habit of picking out of form class players, in the hope that they come good rather than in-form players who might just be up for the job
