As a new member I find this incredibly frustrating

How delightful life would be if everyone were so direct.

I'm sure there are many hundreds, is not thousands of members here. Asking them is not practical as any of a million combinations of members could reply to any others threads or replies, and understanding the context of their messages would be more "intuitively obvious" if there was a location noted (again, voluntarily). I have received a number of messages asking questions, and the meaning was not clear until I found out where they were from.

So bottom line, this board has a very conservative view on personal information(by design) and that is really the answer I was looking for.

Thanks all for your input.

Actually 26,075 members as of this morning, of course it is a moving target. 馃榾

You can always post your area and try and set up a get together.

Although new members are sometimes not "involved" as often 100's of thousands of dollars worth of watches just sit on tables.

We actually have a NAWCC(National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors) chapter nearby. They don't seem to be the kind of folks that chat online, but it'd be great if some of them were here.

Used to live in New Hampster. It's great except for all those dang southerners from Massachusetts. If I remember right, they have a wonderful Strawberry festival up your way in the summertime.

You can tell those of us from North American west coast by our complaining about missing the ST reservation list due to sleeping.

You get to know where where regular members live from sticking around.

To confirm, I mean what country they're in, not the hiding in the bushes type of detail!

Yes... quite right! We don't want any of that 'hiding in bushes' malarky on here. Very unsavoury behavior!馃槨

Anyway I quite like the idea that we don't automatically know where members are on the planet.
We are all part of this happy, hippy global horological family.
It's like we are all in a 'fakkin great big' 1970's Coca Cola TV commercial... but with nice watches!馃槙

[鈥 sometimes I lose critical context of a message because it is from someone who is from an utterly different environment.
I have received a number of messages asking questions, and the meaning was not clear until I found out where they were from.

I鈥檓 curious, can you give examples of these situations?

Finally made the top .0000033% on the planet....if only this was a measure of my wealth instead of exclusive OF membership! 馃槈

I'd bet a lot of the watches worn in that commercial are worth a pretty penny today... what was affordable every day watches....

Yes they would be. Having said that... Hippy watches??? Leather straps and beads... In London in the 60's and 70's we didn't always know what day it was... so knowing the time would have been an additional complication.馃榿

Raise your alcohol and tobacco taxes and boom, problem solved.

I apparently have a chapter around me too.

Has anybody done this and what does an organization like this really offer in return for annual dues?

good indicators of where or what place/country the members are from are their names. so why not require members to use real names if only for the purpose of understanding the context of one's message or post. 馃榿.
