Roaring panther - René André Varnier. Circa 1930
It's nice, but is it really artdeco? (This is a serious question, not an insinuation).

I really think it is. Something wrong with it? Varnier is known for his art deco panthers

Of course it is well known that people open their heads and pour out the contents onto the internet. So, just because something is said to be "art deco" doesn't mean that it is art deco.

René André Varnier's work is clearly associated with art deco as the term runs like a thread through many of the images found in a Google Images search.

"Art Deco" is a term that can mean different things to some extent according to the medium. Bronzes are especially unique in this regard. more as a differentation between these and the earlier Art Noveau . More a matter of period rather than styling.

Nothing wrong. I just couldn't see the kind of design features I associate with artdeco.
I suppose @Professor has explained it: different media of art & design went different paths.

I have always thought of art deco figures as more stylised, less realistic, as with these examples

I gotta confess: I know what I think of as "Art Deco." Now how close that is to the proper definition of the term I'm not sure.

I've seen large panthers in the wilds of Texas and they appear just about as svelte, muscular, and as long the example above as they prowl the edge of a canyon rim in the early morning light.

I know with certainty that this is one of the best threads on the Forum.

As someone who has collected ‘Art Deco’ for over 20 years, I know that term means different things to different people and has been broadly applied to almost everything from the 1920s-40s. A better term that was used at the time in the US would be Art Moderne.

Picked up this enameled and marcasite pendant watch for my wife for our anniversary....if I can wait that long to give it to her (September). Made by Oscar Fresard, of Lucerne. The case metal is sterling silver. The Swiss standing bear hallmark inside the case indicates it was made pre-1934.

Yes. The term ‘Art Deco’ wasn’t coined until the 1960s and was taken from the French exposition of 1925. At the time, the term Moderne was used to describe the new design from Gilbert Rohde, Donald Deskey, Paul Frankl etc. The head of Herman Miller really believed in Rohde and his designs so much so that they abandoned all traditional lines and went strictly modern. When Rohde died in the early 40s, George Nelson took over as head designer continuing the modern tradition. If you want to see furniture that looks as if it were made recently check out Rohde designs for HM. Here’s an example

Beautiful, give it to her now!!

Is this pocket watch deemed Art Deco?
I would call the dial art deco- radial indexes and straight lines. The back of the case remains to be seen.

Below, some art deco in Marrakech, Morocco. First up the Majorelle house and gardens, purchased and saved from destruction by Yves Saint-Laurent — it’s supposed to be art deco although I’m honestly not sure.
The Central Post Office is in the process of being covered by a modern skin.
The last building now housing a bank could also be 1950s but sometimes it’s a fine line.
