I found Apollo 11 to be very enjoyable and perhaps one of the best Apollo documentaries yet. The clean editing and incredible new source material puts you in the moment like few other films. That said, have to concur that Shadow of the Moon is right up there in quality. Been a while since I've watched SOTM so need to go back and see again.
Think about the computers they were using to do the navigation and incredibly sophisticated in space docking maneuvers.
All done with the use of Slide Rules...
Yeeeees. Some IBM 7xx computers too.
Rope Memory and punch cards...
Speaking of Apollo computers, and because pictures, some hardware of the day:
Block I Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) Rope Memory Module made by Raytheon - I believe there are 512 ferrite cores in each module.
Saturn Launch Vehicle Digital Computer (LVDC) made by IBM's Electronics Systems Center in Owego, N.Y. Very state of the art for the day.
Counterclockwise from top:
1) LVDC core memory module (4096 28 bit words); up to eight in a Saturn Instrument Unit (IU)
2) Core memory plane - there are 7-8 of these stacked inside the cube of 1)
3) LVDC logic board - dozens of these cards constituted the launch computer. A handful of logic gates are implemented on each card.
4) 145.022-69
145.022-69 - A portable analog time computer made in the same timeframe with no electronics!
