Have been following this closely. I can't wait. The footage looks amazing... No official release date yet, but i'll throw a wild guess out there....... somewhere around, I don't know, July 20th?

Bumped into a woman last week who works in NASA's film archive department. Much of their archives has still not been digitized. Bizarrely she said that much of their work is currently transferring old film onto newer film - not even digitizing it. I was too busy drooling at the prospect of all that film to even ask if she had any involvement in this doc.

Some very early films are preserved long after all film stock degraded or burned. The National Archives would make paper prints of every frame of a film and these were pretty durable. They reconstructed some historic films from these.

I'm glad someone found a profitable reason for restoring these films.
Peter Jackson has salvaged and restored a lot of WW1 era footage, colorizing and digitally taking out the jerky movements of the old low speed motion picture film to give a very realistic glimpse at what our troops went through. They even had lip readers figure out what troops were saying and dubbed in the voices.

how does this differ with the "first man" movie? i was a bit disappointed with this one because of so much drama.

IMDB says the release date was January 24th and the Vanity Fair article referred to a January release at the Sundance Film Festival so this might already be showing in some places. At least, for you guys in the States I would have thought. Definitely will look to catch it somewhere.

Edit: just read elsewhere May release.

Amazingly there isn't that much good color TV & photo footage of the suit-up activities on the Apollo 11 launchday July 16, 1969...
Documentaries often combine training, countdown demonstration test and actual launchday footage. The latter can be recognized by the fact that the astronauts are wearing the official mission logo on their A7L space suit. On launchday, the official mission logo was also present in the door of the white Astro transfer van which took the crew to the launchpad. This Apollo era "Milk van" was used untill August 1983 (Challenger STS-8).
For the Apollo 11 launchday we see clearly that both Armstrong and Collins wore their Speedmaster on the right wrist, while Aldrin choose to wear it on his left wrist. Photos below show the Apollo 11 crew walkout on Countdown Demonstration Test day and on the actual launchday ...

Excellent news! I doubt it will be shown in our local cinemas, but never know.

70mm is special. Not related to the topic, but one very special free doc is called Baraka (find in youtube), that was filmed on 70mm and it's a godfather of many cinematic styles today (slow-mo, time-lapse etc). Suggest watching it on a massive TV.
