As if Djokovic's "people" don't know...
I'm afraid we saw the same playbook when Sharapova got pulled up over her "heart medication". Gives me no pleasure to say that.
I’m starting a go fund me campaign to see if I can find local legend Tonya Harding. She will fix him.
Not disagreeing, but it raises the question of what we expect from these people, like athletes or media stars.
We idolize them, hang on their every word when interviewed, and they invariably say something pat, banal, or stupid. Because they are successful, and are wealthy, we assume that conveys some degree of intelligence or problems solving skills. In fact, many of those that fall into these categories are undereducated, by devoting much of what would have been traditional education time, to honing their craft.
I’ve worked in ortho/sports rehab my entire life, thus being around athletes much of the time. I will just say this: my ocular muscles were often in spasm from rolling my eyes after hearing some of the utter nonsense that came out of their mouths.
It’s a good point you make. Perhaps in the past society used to live a bit vicariously through some of our sports stars and accept / even celebrate some bad behaviour. Performance and training needs combined with social media has now been driven to such a point that they need to live like a saints and it seems also behave like a saints while maintaining a corporate brand image as paragons of virtue and high standards. They also tend to start much younger. As long as they play a good game and entertain us should we really hold them to the same standards as our leaders and equally the common people. We could chose to cut him some slack and let the sport play on / just enjoy the spectacle of the tournament. It is within our gift and no physical damage has been done - it is more now a point of principle (playing devils advocate). A few more deserving and important non- sport cases might have their feet held to the fire in the meantime / Maybe this tennis issue is a bit of a storm in a tea-cup. On the flip side if we remove all the edgy characters sport will get a bit dull.
You keep saying that we should be "cut him some slack" but he has already been cut significant slack by any reasonable standard. It's pretty clear you feel he is being persecuted for his anti-vaxxer stance, but his celebrity and money has afforded him some very serious advantages in this whole thing compared to the average person.
Do you think it's normal that he was able to get a hearing before a judge on what amounted to the next working day?
Do you think it's normal that someone who fills out a false declaration entering the country wasn't immediately dealt with instead of the minister "debating" if he should face any repercussions, while he is out doing whatever he needs to do?
You seem oblivious to the fact that you aren't really arguing for them to cut him some clack, but for him to get special treatment that an average citizen doesn't get.
My wife is Australian and she has lived through this whole pandemic worried sick that if something ever happened to one of her family members back in Australia (he entire family is there, including her 80 year old mother) that she wouldn't be able to travel there because the entire country was locked down to international travel for all that time. The tone deafness of your posts is somewhat astonishing...
I am just putting an alternative view to encourage some debate - I am not advocating anyone cuts him some slack - just interested in any alternative views. I would add that have also been on my own journey as we all have. I do understand there is a lot of anger around and that will come out. I think we are about to see some of that in the UK as well.
We could chose to cut him some slack and let the sport play on / just enjoy the spectacle of the tournament. It is within our gift
You guys should cut him some slack

Just to summarise;
The unvaccinated Djokovic’s entire strategy to enter Australia was to catch COVID in a period sometime between the advice from Tennis Aust in November and early January?
Which he did.
Hmmm.
Fortunate.
😗
I’m not a superstar athlete but I’d probably have had a backup plan.
It’s interesting that he’s seen as antivax by some people based on his avoidance of a single vaccine that is relatively untested and is not a vaccine at all by the traditional definition of the word. Maybe anti covid vaccine would be a more objective term, if you’re into objectivity. 😀
