I get where the OP'r is coming from here...There is a '65 speedmaster on ebay right now with a displayback showing the 321 doesn't seem right.... but it's kinda weird that I am getting great enjoyment out of my $100 Seagull showing what is basically a manual wound Venus 175 working...

Unscrew it and there's a display crystal case back they should do a modern one.

Personally I don't like display backs this is the only one in the collection due to you can cover it up but is cool to check out the movement once in a while.

The whole "mechanical movement" part of watches is what got me into watches, so I love having exhibition casebacks on my timepieces. Some things are too beautiful to be kept in the dark.
I assume that's a custom display back? What watch is it?

There are a couple watches I own with display backs that I wish were solid cased, only because the movement is particularly ugly, and the watch is already thick. But in general I prefer them, unless the back is unusually detailed otherwise. When I bought my Speedy (a '76) I sourced one of the German display backs since they were selling them on ebay at that point for $0.99 no reserve - they were listed often enough that you could get lucky and score one for $40-50 sometimes, so that's what I did. When I had the watch serviced by @Archer I asked him to install it. The way I look at it it prevents wear on the original caseback, and I get to look at the copper 861 which I like. I don't look at it often, but I enjoy it when I do.

For a standard ETA or a Seiko I definitely do not need a display back.

I don't mind them as a concept. They're visually pleasing. But the thickness they add to a watch's profile REALLY bugs me. Especially with pieces like the Planet Ocean or Seamaster 300 diver. Can we not save a couple of millimetres so more people can wear the damn thing?

It's a 14393 with a 1035 flatlink bracelet! The caseback is actually from a seller off of eBay, it isn't a custom piece.

If its a highly decorated movement I would prefer a display back to be able to admire it.

To each's own.

Often I see a watch and think it’s attractive, and then I see a picture of the back and it has a viewing window and suddenly I don’t like it anymore.

For me there’s something crude about it. It’s too revealing. Like a mankini. I love the mechanics of watches, but somehow they should be left alone to get on with their job in privacy. A watch movement is not a creature in a zoo, there to be gawped at.

I don’t want to look at the movement working. I know it’s working because the watch is telling me the time. I don’t need the manufacturer to prove to me I have a mechanical watch by allowing me to see it being all mechanical.

It’s the same with those dreadful cars where half the bonnet (hood) is removed so you can see the rubber and chromium plated pipes. Put them away. Nobody’s interested in your flashy, noisy, gas guzzler.

The first time I saw a Railmaster Co-axial with a display back I was so disappointed. I thought Omega had more class than to do that.

Know what I mean?

For me, a display back maybe works on a fancy watch, like a JLC, in the same way that having a visible engine works on a Ferrari. Again, just for myself, I wouldn’t want a see-through hood on my Jeep nor would I want a display back on a sport model Rolex or a tool watch like a Speedmaster.

No comparison really but to be fair we are looking at the Langé being 10 plus times the GP 4946 cost.
Plus a nice 321 in a 2998.5

I don’t mind the display back... actually it’s a shame that more watches don’t come with a display back.

If the display back affects the ergonomics of the watch then it’s a definite no for me.
