Anyone bid on this -65 Ed White? Why or why not?

Saw this on the Bay and it kind of caught my interest.

Things I like:
- Sharp case
- Bracelet
- Movement serial range

Things I don’t like:
- Banged up DON bezel
- Marker Lume
- Hands
- Service crown?
- Movement screw corrosion moisture damage etc.

Sold for $4850

I have been shopping for a 105.012 or 145.012 but started considering the Ed White. I prefer the case esthetics of the later .012’s but can’t deny the White is the one that has done it all horoligicaly or historically speaking.

So, did any of you bid on this one? Why or why not? Is it a candidate for Omega factory service, sympathetic optimization parts bin?

I've been watching the Ed White's closely for most of this year and I think that was a good buy for a fixer upper. That price is close to what people are asking for a correct movement. Not sure if they are getting it though.
The case does look unpolished but has definitely taken some solid hits. I'd get the movement rebuilt, tidy the hands, and see if the dings could be taken out of the bezel if it were mine.
And if someone did buy it to part, message me. 😜

That’s a long time to be on the hunt. I gave myself a year but can get distracted along the way … lol. i applaud you. Happy hunting.

I’m pretty hard on whatever I buy. So, no safe queens here… I try to take care of my watches, but life happens.

Ha! I think the length of my search is because I am distracted! Way too many hobbies and interests dividing my time. Agreed, a watch is to be worn. Good luck landing your Speedy.

The South America Special? Did you read the sellers completed auctions? Seller from Peru, a Country known for " vintage Omega's " ..... 17 feedback, but nothing to check. Ready to take the Risk ?

From those pictures, the case seems unpolished(ish) but certainly has a lot of wear. That and the movement appear to be the only plus points as the bracelet and claps don’t match (links are 1171/1125 type), the bezel
Is poor, the dial is poor, the hands are poor and the crown is wrong.

So although it appears largely correct, it will cost a decent amount of money to get it cleaned, serviced, dial relumed and a new crown and it will end up a highly restored example that still Isn’t great.

Certainly ok at 5k but I wouldn’t have paid much more.

It seems more or less in line with the speedmaster101 price chart (stating the obvious), so as long as someone would be interested to put in the work (I'd want to replace the bezel and crown, and relume the dial and potentially the hands) and be happy to end up with a watch that is still only ~fair (perhaps for the cost savings), I'd say go for it (as long as the seller were reputable).

I'd also been searching for a 145.012 for ~3 months and finally pulled the trigger this week. I'd be happy to share the ones I passed on and why, and the remaining ones that I was debating between, if interested.

Great points. I noticed the bracelet links weren’t flat and the attachment to the clasp is all wrong. Figured the bracelet/clasp pieces may still have some resale value. Trying to figure out some of the recent 321 sales under $5k, and what peoples end goals are with them. Are they parting out, restoring, using as donors? I’m fascinated by the niches within this hobby. Always more to learn.

Well, it stayed under the 101 current pricing chart for poor condition head only. Beyond that it comes down to seller.

I am interested in the links and discussion of reasoning behind your final decision.

I've also been in discussions with a seller of a single-family-owned 145.012 for under $5k that has chrono reset problems, a washed dial, and a scuffed crystal, and in that case, I was going to fix it up, so we'll see what happens with that...

There’s also current time of year and market to consider.
Summer is generally the slowest time of year and with the current bear market and currency issues, some of the heat has left the market. When that happens, it tends to impact poor examples the most

I have a 105 003 Speedmaster that I bought in 1967 (2 years before the moon shot) while stationed in Germany. It’s in much better conditioned then the one pictured, missing only the bracelet, replaced by a leather band. It’s been serviced a couple times and the hands replaced but other then that, it’s original. I’ve thought about selling but haven’t pulled the trigger. These days I wear a Timex. Hopefully no one will cut my hand off for a Timex!

Interesting. What do you think caused the discoloration of the luminous?

Bummer about the dial lume. Did the movement get any moisture damage that had to be fixed?
