Rolex collectors are like "I have the Sub, Sub date, Hulk, Starbucks, steel Pepsi on oyster, Batman, and Bluesy. My collection is diversified."

Speedy collectors are like "No need to get a Sapphire Sandwich and a Hesalite. They're way too similar."
Yes, but the new Ed White - drooling.

Agreed but the new Ed White 321 isn't a normal Sapphire Sandwich.

My opinion, if anyone cares, is get only 1 modern version. My preference for modern is sapphire sandwhich as I feel hesalite is too delicate and because you have to be able to see the movement of course!

If you need a second Speedmaster with hesalite as well, perhaps look into acquiring a vintage one to fill that void.

I've worn both hesalite and sapphire Speedmasters to dress-up events. My gold dress watches stay at home in the watch box -- I lost my appreciation for them years ago. If I am at an event, and people are concerned over a couple extra pushers and subdials on my watch they are not people I am interested in hanging out with in the first place. 😁

For extra fun I wear a #PCASpeedy sometimes and don't bother setting it to the correct date. A friend of mine who is a long-time watch collector gets a nervous twitch whenever he sees an incorrect date displayed. So that provides me with some entertainment, as he will repeatedly insist that I hand him the watch so he can set the date for me.

The cornerstone of collector rationalization is the justification of more watches based on the tiniest bit of minutiae. What are you trying to do here, drive people to therapy?
I thought we were already engaged in that. Retail therapy!

Back to the original question, two just looks like indecision; three or more however….

I have and Ed White and a FOIS, so in a sense, Hesalite and Sapphire versions of the same watch, and also a gold Reverso. Does this make me a bad person?

I probably wouldn’t go as far as bad.

“Eccentric”, maybe.

We all forget that what passes for normal on an Omega forum would seem strange to 99% of people

I currently have a Snoopy 50th and a FOIS. I guess I need to get one more Speedy!

Well, there are gold dress watches and then there are gold dress watches. 😀

A PO is a fallback if I am not in the mood for a Speedmaster. Still a tool watch, so I am not conceding much to the 'prim and proper' people...

I missed out on the Connie train. Prices are too high now. I wish I had picked up a nice dogleg/ piepan 3-4 years ago. Still not sure I would wear one much, though -- I would probably just pull it out of the box every now and then to ooh and aah over it.

I am on a Lotus Elite (Type 14) forum and to 99.999% of people arriving in one of those would be a "You came here in that? You're braver than I thought!"

I use the FOIS as my dress Speedy. Not sure I'd buy two 3861-based Moon watches but I could see owning an 1861 hesalite also.

I did trade a Seadweller in 2005 for 3 Speedmasters, but they wear all collectable and different. One was a sapphire Sandwich, an Apollo 11, and another one that I can't remember. I felt that I had too much redundancy so ended up selling them on.

I'd get a dressier Speedmaster if you're looking for a dressier Speedmaster.

3575.20, 3575.30, Tokyo 2020, or an Aqua Terra

WatchBox has reviewed basically every model I can think of:
https://www.youtube.com/c/WatchBoxReviews/search?query=speedmaster

I was in the same situation, kind of. I have the FOIS and had my eye on a 3861 but came to the decision it's a bit much to have a watch that has a dial that is 90% the same. Went with a 3572.50.

So my Speedy (3861 Sapphire w/bracelet) has become my favorite watch in my collection...I rotate it, but wear it 4-5 days each week.

I've been running scenarios in my head if I should get the Hesalite (w/ strap) and use it more as a dress watch (nice dinners & events) so I can use the Sapphire for everyday use since the crystal is more robust (dings, desk diving, etc..).

The Hesalite also makes the dial pop and you also got that nice distortion that the box sapphire cannot achieve.....in addition, I can equip each with different straps and wear the one that strikes my fancy that morning/event, probably reducing the frequency of swapping straps and scratching the inner surfaces of the lugs.....

I've read the threads about owning multiple Speedmasters, but just curious if a few people get both Moonwatches as I described above ...or get a different color dial Speedy for their second option....

Feel free to post pics and thanks in advance for your replies....

Interesting that you would choose the plainer Speedmaster (no polished parts in bracelet, no polished applied logo) as the “dress” watch in this scenario over the one that has these features and is thus flashier, and some would argue, “dressier.”

But any excuse to buy another watch, right?

😀

As it was explained to me, there is only one Moonwatch, and that is the hesalite in whatever caliber in production. When I bought mine, it was the 1861. And now the 3861. All others are nice Omega watches. 😁

I've often thought of adding a sapphire sandwich 3861 to pair with my 1861 hesalite, but other lust has taken over. I'm in the throws of Mk II re-issue lust and if I can source one, a DSofM Apollo 8 has a spot in my watch box.

All that said if you love the watch and want another variant; do it! These wondrous little things are entirely an emotional decision. Get what blows your hair back. Hell, I'm working on three different Speedies.

I wear my 3861 as a every day watch and love it. But for a dress watch I usually pull out one of my Limited Edition Speedmasters. Not sure I would buy two 3861's when there are so many LE Speedmasters to choose from.
