Any thoughts on the Universal Geneve Polerouter Date

Rust certainly can be removed. The problem is that it will take metal with it when it goes.

If there is rust on any of the critical components of a watch (wheels, springs, etc.), then those parts must be replaced as they will likely never function to original specifications again. Parts for these watches can be quite difficult to source. Universal never had a wide distribution network (at least not in the USA).

As I said, it can be done, but it is going to be very expensive and time consuming. Better to pay more and get a watch in better condition.

Hi,

I really appreciate you spending time to educate me on rust. I will adhere to your advise and take more effort and time to get a watch in better condition. Thanks!

Hello, I am jumping in late to this thread. Please feel free to direct me to a better forum/thread to get help with my questions.

I have this Polerouter and was curious if anyone knew:
- year
- model
- its uniqueness or lack thereof
- recommendation for servicing (I live in the US - Hawaii)

I have not been able to find any similar images on the web. The body appears to be stainless steel, the face is dark brown and has gold colored hands and number markings. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Your watch is a Polerouter (it’s right on the dial) with a 138SS bumper movement, which means it was likely made in 1956-57. The case is in nice condition and you have the original crown. A good example.

You could have started a new thread by the way, since this was stated for a different watch.

Here is a list of Universal serial numbers:

UGserial_list.gif

From the number on the caseback, production looks more like 1955. I think the microrotor movements were introduced around 1956, so this makes sense.

Looks like a very nice watch.

Excellent, thank you very much for this information! I love this watch, it has been sitting in a drawer for 30+ years and still keeps perfect time.
