Advice sought Omega Geneve

Good morning.

While clearing my wife's grandads house we have come across an Omega Geneve watch. The watch is working well.

I was looking to see if anyone could provide a rough estimate of the value of this watch. I have looked online and can see similar watches, but not one identical. The models I have seen online do not have numbers all around the watch face like this.

The reason I ask is that I have been told to keep the watch, but would feel uncomfortable doing so if it was to be valuable.

Thank you,

With a cleaning I think it’s quite a fine looking example you’ve got there. The all arabic numerals dial is certainly unusular but i wouldn’t say rare. For price, I would say around 500 euros if you wait for the right buyer to come along.

I would vote that you keep it, get it serviced by a watchmaker and wear it. But of course entirely up to you.

Thank you for your very prompt reply. If it was to be worth 500 euro I will definitely keep and wear it. I am glad that you say its unusual, I thought maybe I was missing something obvious when I was looking online for info.

I think €500 is optimistic. The photos aren’t great but if they actually reflect the condition of the dial, case, crystal and movement then about €250-350.

It also needs a service, and a new gasket costing at least €100-150 plus parts and after all that, you’ll have what is often called an ‘entry level' Omega.

There are better models around for €500, some of which may already have been serviced.

That said, all Omegas are good and cleaned up and serviced (and handled with clean hands) this will make a nice every day wearer with a nice family connection.

Make sure you keep the strap buckle and that it is fitted to any new strap you get. The buckle is probably almost as collectible as the watch 😀

I agree, but as I said 500 was if you wait for the right buyer to come around. I know that some people are looking particularly for an all numerals watch like this and hence might pay the extra. Also depends on where OP is situated. I could sell that watch to my watchmaker for 380 euro any day and he would then sell it on for a profit. I am situated in Denmark.

Again, thank you for your replies. I am based in Scotland, UK.

When looking online I found other similar watches for around £500, but could not find one identical so thought I'd ask.

The face of the watch does look scratched in the photos, but it does not look so bad "in the flesh".

I will definitely wear the watch, especially with the family links. My mother in law told me to keep it, but if it had been very valuable (which I didn't expect it to be), I would have told her so and let her make an informed decision on what to do with it.

Thank you all again, and I promise I will keep my hands clean when handling the watch in future 😁

That sounds great. Make sure to have a watchmaker service it before wearing - otherwise you risk damaging the movement. The back gasket is also heavily corroded (hence the black marks on your fingers) and if that gets into the movement.. well let's just say it isn't good.

The watches you see from dealers etc at £500 plus have been serviced. That would cost you £175-400 depending on who you use. Yours is in as found condition. The numeral dial is commonly seen on UK pieces (it was offered here as an option) and is rarer overseas but doesn't really command much if any premium. If you listed that honestly on ebay, I doubt it would go much above £300 because a sensible buyer will know they have to lay out a fair wedge more to put it right. Of course you might snare an idiot, but you may also be snared by a scammer. Such is the gamble ebay offers
